Corner Light Mod - Be Careful...

So, I don't know how many of you do the corner light mod to make the bulb brighter...you know, snip the top nub, tape it off, etc etc.

I've gone through a few sets of bulbs on my corner lights, trying to find the right ones, colors, whatever. And ever since i read about it I've ALWAYS done this mod.

So the other day one of my bulbs died on me. Long story short, I tried to take it out...it shattered in my hand. Cut my thumb wide open, glass stuck in it, hit an artery, lots of blood.

Moral of the story, I don't know if you have ever felt the corner light housings, but these bastards get HOT. My guess would be the bulb just got kinda weak after being so hot and...yeah, that was the result.

So be careful with that if you don't want a bulb to blow up in your hand.

Wow....Thats sucks, Thanks for the heads up.
I have done this mod as well and noticed the corner
housing it self gets a lot hotter than if you just have
the bulb in the regular way.
haven't tried removing it yet though..
Will def be using a pair of vice grips to take it out when its done.

I know it's been discussed before, as far as getting hot. I don't know if anyone's had one shatter in their hand though, so I thought I'd warn everyone so they don't have to get glass stuck in their hand like me =P

Wow, thanks for giving me the heads up. I will now wear gloves when changing out those little things.

I personally would have had made a thread to warn people as well if that happened to me. Hope your thumbs heal up with no scarring!

Haha, I'm sure he'd care if it happened to him

Ahh well, I'm glad at least a few people learned something new. Maybe if I took a picture of my hand and garage floor immediately after the incident it would have made more impact

Mine get pretty warm, but my housings haven't melted yet. Even in the summer time it cools off quite a bit where I live though, so I usually never even have them on when the ambient temps are high.

Thanks for the warning though about the possibly weakened bulbs!

I know it, I don't think anyone's have. It's just crazy how hot they get especially with the mod.

I dont know about burning out, But i installed a pair of 1157 amber bulbs about a month ago with this mod and didn't care for the amber look too much. When i took them out yesterday, The amber bulbs were already blackened.I went with a LED corner bulb, Looks much better.

If anyones interested. You can get them here.

Thanks for the link. All the LED bulbs in stores like that are like 20 bucks for one.

I don't suppose you have a picture of how those look in your car?

Sorry if the pics are too big..Im sure pmohr will correct me if they are..In any case.
The LEDs kind of have a blue-ish tint to them.My headlamps are pretty white.
They just look kind of yellow because of how bright the LED is..
I heard that the PIAA are more blue than the SS so maybe that is next for the Max.

Those look pretty good actually. I don't want to risk it though. I just got a ticket for purple LED's in my clear sidemarkers, 2 weeks after my ticket for blue fogs. I just drilled a hole in put in a huge white LED in my corner light. Looks great at night.

Those Headlights look like a pretty good color though..i may have to get those. Thanks for taking those man.

Ohh..ya i forgot you Michigan guys have those crazy laws.
I've been pinched a few times myself in Mi.
I live about 5 miles from the Mi state Line.
I had an aftermarket flowmaster muffler and
I got a ticket for disturbing the peace.
Mi. FTL !

And no prob on the pics.

For sure. I got a waiverable (r&r) ticket for blue fog lights a few weeks ago. Then the other night I got pulled over in Rockford, by the same cop that pulled me over two months ago and told me to get rid of my blue LED side markers. I did. But I made them purple. Hahaha. So, he wasn't very nice this time, and gave me a non-waiverable ticket.
