I'm having the same problem, except I think both of mine are bad. That price is a little high also, I got a quote of $150 with parts for each side.

What exactly are the signs of a bad wheel bearing? I question some of the noises coming from the front suspension sometimes...

thanks

You'll hear a pulsing humming or growling noise from the front of the car when you're turning at speed, usually above 30mph (at least for mine). Sadly, I don't think there's any concrete test for it other than making sure the noise isn't coming from anywhere else. You just can't inspect them without taking the hub assembly apart.

$289 seems pricey. I ordered the part for $60 from the nissan dealer in Arizona (in the links page) and had it installed for $90. I am in Germany so I had a local garage do it.

When my right wheel bearing went bad I heard a *tum tum tum* noise while making a right turn. My steering wheel was shaking too.

The noise everyone has posted in here is the classic symptom of bearing failure... I can't really see how it would cause a clanking noise without seriously affecting driveability of the car, I think that noise at least points to something else.

I replaced front left baring without a hub(make sure your hub is in good condition in the front. If not replace it also). It cost me 120.
And I also replaced rear right(that came with a hub). That cost me about 120 too. Labor included.

How to check for sure

Jack up the front of the car so the offending wheel is hanging. Then put your hands on the top and bottom of the wheel. Pull back and forth on the top and bottom of the wheel to check for looseness. If the top or bottom of the wheel deflects even a little bit, odds are you have a failing wheel bearing.

BTW I had a quote of about $300 once from a local garage to do a wheel bearing. He had me by my b*lls though since the car was nearly undrivable. Nice to know the parts involved aren't too expensive; I'll do it myself the next time it happens.

Regards,
TOM

Do I try to make the wheel move along its axis of travel or perpendicular to it?

that would probably explain why after i got my wheels balanced the car still wobbled and shakes on the freeway. i did not have a chance to take my car to the dealer but it will be done next week.

I'm gonna go with "perpendicular to,"

in other words, eg: you're pushing on the outer sidewall at the bottom of the tire and pulling on the inner sidewall at the top of the tire with the vehicle securely raised either on a lift or on jackstands. Use a strong back and forth pressure to feel for any "play." There should be none.

Do not trust a jack alone for this test.

Had Hub Bearing Changed

I had my driver's side hub bearing go bad. Everyone want 200+ to do it. I took it to tire kingdom and paid i think some where around 120. The part was about 40 bucks. Hopefully no more go bad!!

Re: Had Hub Bearing Changed

My left front bearing is going bad too. Nissan dealer replaced it about 11K miles ago when they replaced the bearings in my 5spd tranny. They are already talking hub replacement as well. I think they should have replaced it before. We'll see.
It was easy to recognize with the wheel off the ground, like been said, grab the top and bottom of the wheel and wiggle. The wheel should have no play.

The symptoms of a bad wheel bearing also happen to be very similar to symptoms of a bad tire, wheel, or wheel balance. Before concluding that your wheel bearing is bad, and hterefore a more expensive repair, try rotating your tires. If those humms, growls etc move with the rotation, then you wheel bearings are OK

FYI, if you want a great deal on the parts for this repair (bearings and seals) call Dave B at Town North Nissan. His number is in the 5th gen stcicky about parts. He'll get you OEM parts at prices that compare very well to the ones someone got at Tire Kingdom. I don't want to post exact prices because some people don't like doing that, but Dave will get you a great deal, and great post-sale service.

Interesting thread.. Here is a question.

I have been hearing noises from what seems to be my right front wheel. It makes a humming noise that increases when I turn to the right. It actually makes a thump-thump-thump kinda noise when turing a corner. (Don't you just LOVE noise descriptions?) Anyway - my dad and I got together and rotated the tires - did the push-pull test to see if there was any play and there wasn't. We even ran the car up on blocks to see if we could locate the noise. We couldn't really hear anything with the wheels off. My dad says that he thinks its the CV joints. My dad is pretty mechanical but I don't want to spend the money on a rebuilt axle (cheaper than just the CV joint) is it's someother problem... Any ideas?

If you're going to do the CV joints just buy the wheel bearings anyway. The parts are relatively cheap.

where are you people getting these prices? not that i'm saying you're liars, lol, but considering that the front wheel bearings are a sealed unit, those kind always run significantly more than that. right??

I never noticed this the first time... wheel bearings aren't a sealed unit, they're a single part inside the hub assembly that can be replaced on its own. Go to http://www.motorvate.ca for an excellent write-up on replacing wheel bearings.
