Bummer, didn't want to hear that Anyway, I'm like 80% sure that my bearing is bad. I'm still hoping that its my tires wearing out, and the agressive tread is making all that noise. My Pirelli P7000s used to do that when they aged. Once I put on a new set, the hum was GONE. I guess I will know for certain when I change to my 15" rims. If the hum is still there, then there's no doubt.

Mine starts around 10-15 and I can hear it up to about 75, but that doesn't mean it's gone, just that I can't hear it over road and wind noise.

Wheel Bearing

Yo, I had the same sound on the drivers side. I just took the car to my regular mechanic (RIPP modifications NYC) and that noise was the axle nut that was loose. If I would of took it anywhere else, they would of charged me $200 for turning a nut.
Check the nut before you pay for nothing!

Re: Wheel Bearing

Hi guys,

Just inspected this thread since I noticed that my Maxima had a hum-hum-hum sound from 15 mph to around 65 mph.

It's at its worst around 25-30mph. However, I have a question for you, how do you know it's the bearing and NOT the hub?

I am thinking of ordering the parts and all, but I don't know whether I should buy the hub and the bearing, or just one of these....

Any lead is appreciated!

Quick wheel bearing test: jack the car up so the offending corner is off the ground. Hold the wheel at the top and bottom and try to get it to move around its horizontal axis (the way a wheel's not supposed to rotate). Another explanation, try to make it look like it has a lot of negative camber, then do the opposite. It shouldn't rotate around the horizontal axis. If there's any play in the wheel during this test it could mean your bearing is bad. If the wheel doesn't move your bearing is likely within spec and isn't the problem. There are a lot of parts down in the front suspension and hub area that could cause a noise like this, so you've got to do some good detective work.

I just had the same bearing replaced last friday. . . Cost me $235 for parts and labor. . . As long as you have a press then you should have no problems if you know what you are doing, I didn't and so I paid someone else to do it.

You don't need a press. I made a $15 tool that worked great!
Look at www.motorvate.ca, click on "suspension", and "wheel bearing part 2" to see what it looks like.

Good Luck!
