Did you check your voltage across the battery?

It sounds like you are getting juice to the soleniod for the starter, but the starter doesn't have enough voltage to turn the motor over. I had this problem one time when I left the lights on an drained the battery to the point all of the above mentioned happened.

Luckily I was parked on a slope facing down, popped the clutch to start the car and got the alternator to charge the battery again.

The spinning noise is the starter motor. Your starter solenoid is not engaging the starter motor to the crank. You're better off replacing eveverthing. It would be a PITA trying to rebuild it and you will spend more time than necessary. Starters are anywhere from $120-200...depends on reman or new at an auto parts dealer. Would not recommend a Nissan Stealership, you can get better pricing than that.

If anything, you can try to replace just the solenoid on the starter. The way you describe the problem, it is a soleniod issue. If your starter is spinning fine, I wouldn't mess with the starter bearings. If you can pull a part number off the solenoid, you may be able to x-refence on google or something.

If there is a short in the solenoid......yes, because there is not enough resistance inside the coil of the solenoid. A short in the coil is like putting a jumper across battery terminals.... NOT GOOD!!!!!!!!

Was your fuse blown while checking this issue?

If it didn't blow the fuse, you may have a case of over resistance or corrosion inside of the solenoid, which is creating a condition which the coil isn't generating the force to push out hard enough to engage the starter gear to the crank.

Check your contact points and be sure they are tight and clear of corrosion...this may cause your solenoid not to engage as well. You may need to remove the air intake box in order to reach those contacts

Remove both the + and - cables from the battery and clean those terminals as well. You will need to remove these anyway before cleaning the contacts. SAFETY FIRST!!!!

Another thing to check is the engine ground cable. Check link:
