Bad clutch maybe?

Just recently I started to hear what sounded like a wheel bearing going out. Then it started to make weird noises (shush shush shush) at idle. When I push the clutch in it slowly spins out and stops. When driving it sounds like a baseball card in the spokes. Again, when I push the clutch in it goes away. Could that be the clutch bearing? This has probably been talked about but I never have any luck with the search feature. Are the XTR clutches on ebay any good? Not alot of money but don't want to change every 10000 miles.

nobody? I checked the level in the clutch res and it is full, dark, but full. I still have really good pressure so i don't know if it is an axle or tranny possibly. The axles were changed a few months ago and I have no leaks. I did see that the boot around the clutch linkage popped out a little bit if that could cause anything. both of my cars broke down the same week, need some help

if its a axle or wheel bearing the sound wont go away when the clutch is pushed it. so my guess it it is either a bad clutch or throwout bearing or pilot bearing or any combo of the 3.

If it goes away when you push the clutch in, it could quite possibly be the input shaft bearing. Although that would be worse case scenario as well as a different noise than what you describe. Have you checked/changed tranny fluid lately? Is it full?

*Edit*: I mean slightly different noise. More like a whirring noise that you hear spin up when you release the clutch and goes away when you press the clutch pedal.

Sorry about the late response and thanks for the input. Its hard to describe the noise. When at idle id when it makes the whirring or shushing noise, and then when I push the clutch in you can hear it slowly spinning to a stop. when driving it sounds like a baseball card between the spokes kind of thing. Sorry about my ignorance but where is the input shaft bearing located. I'll have to check my fluid but I recently changed both axels and had flushed the tranny and filled with amsoil. Don't see any leaks either.

Let me add that I drive this thing everyday all day for my job, so it gets alot of stop and go wear if that helps. And if you couldn't hear, the car drives fine and I have no problem shifting. Every once in a while it doesn't want to go into reverse but when I let off and push the clutch back in it's fine.

With that description. it is starting to sound like the input shaft bearing. Sadly, it's a common problem in the manual tranny. The bearing is located inside of the transmission. Removal of the transmission is required. Look up in the how to's. JtzMax has a very very good write up that I used to rebuild mine.

The stop and go traffic is no determinant. Driving any style wears vehicles of any type out.

The reverse issue is normal. Like that on any manual transmission vehicle.

Sounds like IPS bearings to me. When you search you have to set the sort-type to "relevancy" or its just going to give you results that don't have anything to do with what you searched for.

I've driven on some louuuud IPS bearings and when I removed them they didnt even really have any play in them, they probably could have lasted a long time. The noise is obnoxious though.

I've got the whine in 1st gear only with my '96, and its not enough to justify the cost for me. I've set my sights on an '06 Infiniti M45 when I get out of college in a few years
