whoa bro...I had the same leak from exactly that same location. I have a 97 maxima gle and it turned out to be a leaky differential bearing in the manual transmission. Basically, (as it was explained to me by my mechanic) between the axle and the transmission there is a bearing and for 97 maximas these things get chewed up after time. My car had 155k mile when it started leaking and i had jus bought it a couple of months prior so needless to say i was pissed. Cost me 1200 bucks to replace the tranny, new clutch, and labor. Do some research on this site...apparently this is a manufacturer defect and some machining work is needed to recitfy otherwise da mechanic will unwittingly replace the tranny and the same thing might happen again.

I have an automatic transmission.... Does that still apply? right now I'm just going to spray it with break cleaner to try to isolate the source. I just don't know if it's coming from the tranny pan, or the area on the side of the tranny- I think it's called the valve cover but I don't know for sure. It may be both. I got to get it done before the winter cometh...

Im not too sure about automatics but i know if u have to replace the tranny its much easier to find automatic than the manual. Its unlikely that the transmission seal is leaking. And if it is tranmission fluid that is leaking then u dont have a lot of time. U will eventually burn out the gears or jus keep checking the fluid level and adding more fluid hehe
