how important are dust boots?

i purchased soem KYB's a while back, but i didnt order the dust boots that fit them. I was just wondering how important they are, or if its possible to use the ones on your stock struts? Or do the stock struts even have them? Can anyone shed some light for me...

Thanks

theoretically they are very important. If one little piece of sand gets stuck in the seal of the strut, it can scratch the rod. Then you're screwed. But, I've been without themfor a while now with no problems.

It's up to you. Just try not to go offroading on deep mud.
