Brake problems, should be simple but I'm stumped
So about 10K miles ago I put Gen 5.5 front brakes on my car and redid the rear brakes. I got the rotors and ceramic pads from a vendor here that most people use. I used rebuilt aftermarket calipers all around. At first everything was perfect.
4K miles after I first installed these parts, I had to send my car to a body shop. They had the car for about 2 weeks, and I think maybe someone took it out and hot-rodded it around, because when I got it back the brakes shuddered. Now, about 6K miles after the body shop visit, I am fed up. The symptom is that the car shudders during braking pretty strongly at speeds of above 30mph, the shuddering is strongest at light braking, and will calm down a bit if I jam the brakes hard. It definitely feels like the rear is shuddering, not the front. My steering wheel feels fine, no vibration apparent in the steering wheel.
So today I took the rear rotors off, had them re-cut. The tech who cut them told me that they didn't seem warped as he began cutting. Anyways, I re-install the rotors, check my rear calipers, they are not binding. I have disconnected the parking brake cables a long time ago as both rear cables are frozen, so the park brake on the calipers are not connected. I also rotated the tires.
Anyway, the problem persists. Am I missing something basic here? I was always under the impression that warped front rotors, or other front brake problems would be obvious because they affect the steering wheel, i.e. you feel front brake problems in the steering wheel. And rear brake problems affect the whole body of the car, like a shudder. WTF am I missing?
I hear Maxima brakes suck, but my old OEM stuff was fine, I only "upgraded" to this stuff to "keep up" with the motor swap I have in it. I kind of regret it now!
Any ideas what else could be wrong?
