Advice needed on replacing the car radio

Hi,

My 98 Maxima factory car radio is dying (volume control not working, cd gets stuck often, etc). It's also a tape and CD player.

Looks like this:

Can I upgrade to a DVD and CD player? (Meaning a DVD that has mp3 format for music), and get rid of the tape deck as I no longer listen to Barry Manalow

Would that would fit nicely?

If I bought the same radio that I have now, is it a simple installation?

I see ebay has the same radio for about $100, but maybe if a few more bucks I can upgrade to mp3 player.

Thanks for the suggestions

If you have the BOSE system, then this is what you need for MP3 playback with a factory appearance.

U can install any aftermarket radio/dvd system u want. There is plenty of space in the dash

Get the Factory service manual or the Haynes manual. It will show u how to replace the radio

My 97 had the Blows, ur I mean Bose CD/Tape/Radio in it-same prob-volume control developed a mind of it's own. I replaced it with a 2 DIN DVD/CD/MP3 player. Had to mod the factory radio brackets that hold the stock radio to mate with the mounting on the new unit. I also picked up a factory wire harness at WallyMart, unplugged the Bose Speaker Amps and wired directly to new Infinity Speakers. I used 6.5" coaxials in the rear and 6.5" Components in the front-popped off the factory tweeter grills and carefully modded to fit the Infinity Tweets-turned out NICE and sounds every bit as good as the Better Off with Something Else stock system. In fact i used the plastic housings in the front doors for the Infinity X-overs. You will also need an antenna adapter-available at WallyMart also.

Actually it's not a bosh, but it does look like that pic.
On the Tape cover it says

"Full Logic Deck Auto Metal cn585 Dolby b NR"

njmaxseltd: how old is that radio? Have any pics?..send me a pm for price, I might be interested if the mp3 price is out of reach.

Thanks!

maxirob: Which 2 DIN DVD/CD/MP3 did you buy? Doesn't the drive gear get in the way when opening those 2 DIN players?

It's a valor ngw-670 I think. No problem with clearance when open. Sounds like you don't have the BLOWS unit- so all you have to do is get a wire harness and antenna adapter and mod the backets and you be jammin'

Diddo on the door mod for the tweets. I did the same thing in my max! Infinity tweet I put in look almost as if they came from the factory.

You could really put any radio you want in there single din if you wanted to keep the pocket, and double din if you wanted to get rid of the pocket and put in a nice 7" screen. Not hard to wire up either so you could save yourself some money by doing it yourself and put it towards the radio. I'de suggest aftermarket and like the rest are saying, crutchfield has a huge selection but sometimes expensive, depends on how much your trying to spend.

If you do get a different radio, I recommend running 16-18awg speaker wire to all your speakers rather than simply using the factory wiring. It makes everything much less of a hassle in the future. Its not too hard to get the wires into the doors.

I put heatshrink tubing on the speaker wire after passing it out of the cabin's rubber hole and into the rubber on the door, ziptied it to the factory wire bundle, it looks factory but it makes aftermarket speakers a lot less of a hassle (don't have to use the puny factory wire).

I also have a 98 maxima with the bose head unit - it has also been acting up. I tried to install a sony head unit, but left the bose speakers. I got no power to the new sony head unit, it didn't turn on. Is this because the system will only work with a bose head unit?

TO Jinkst1 : Look at the Forum listing for Maintenance ... - there's a section for Audio & Electronics whole lot of instructions and Q&As about replacing Bose. You prob need an adapter harness, and the speakers need to be replaced cause they're amplified. Look it all up ... since I don't have Bose, I can't give you details.
