Resetting sevice engine soon light

I recently tripped the service engine soon light when I uninstalled a broken aftermarket car alarm. Does anyone know how to reset the light or ECU? A buddy of mine said on some cars you can unplug the battery for a few hours and the ECU will reset. I tried this and it didn't work. There is nothing wrong with the car as all the wires are hooked up properly. Anybody have any ideas on how to reset without going to the dealer?
