idler pulley flys off ????
Dude, is this common or am i just a canidate for bad luck ? We were going to pick up a christmas present for my daughter and me and my wife heard something "clunk" from under the car. I asked her what it was she says a stick , lmaooo. a few seconds later i hear some clanging noise and the typical lights came on . Needless to say i made it to the shop and they fixed me up but it seems like i need the adjustment bracket that the idler pully bolts to. The bolt got messed up a little when the pulley came off. Man some kinda luck im having ! In the 4 months i have owned this car i have replace the plugs , struts and everything that that includes , a new axle , new battery , 2 new tires , a harmonic balancer , tie rods ,new clutch and now a idler pulley. And i thought i got a deal when i found a 5spd Se for 1800 , lmaoooo ! I guess you live and learn though. I could have a bad a$$ car by now if didnt have to replace something everytime i leave the driveway , lol ! Sorry just needed to vent a little !
Just going off what the recipt said , i probablly got screwed , lol remember i am the canidate for bad luck . But beleive me i will be checking into it. Man i install glass im by far no mechanic , lol !
I thought a harmonic balancer was a separate part, that's pressed onto the crankshaft, and the pulley then bolts to it. But it looks like a crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer are one integral piece, so I guess it's correct to call that part a harmonic balancer. The FSM and the Haynes manual just call it the crankshaft pulley, so I thought we didn't have a harmonic balancer. Shows how much I know.
I've had it happen once. When that bearing in the pulley starts to seize up it will spin the nut right off and then the pulley will come off.
Idler pulley and harmonic balancer (crank pulley) are two different parts though, I can't tell from your post if you had to replace the crank pulley in a separate incident or not.

one i bought from Autozone . I guess the bolt got screwed up from the previous whining. When i heard the whining , like i said i checked everything out but couldnt see nothing.
After he replaced the pulley the steering was back to normal but with the bolt and adjustment bracket being bad i went ahead and got one from a fellow orger. Just waiting on it to come in. Im pretty sure it should solve my lil problem. The nut on the adjustment bracket bolt wouldnt go on all the way due to being stripped (I am assuming from excessive whining).
I just cant believe i over looked something so small. Crazy thing is , the bearings stayed on the bolt but the pulley fell off. Never fount the pulley.I guess the internals were just shot.
Same thing here , i got one from VQPhantom ! Thank goodness he had one.
