gas for '99maxima?
I just bought my first Maxima and I was wondering what the recommended octane rating is for use in a '99 Maxima and what you guys are using? Also, what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Thanks.

Hmm, this has been discussed, I also think it's in the FAQ section!
I'd advise you to read up on the FAQ's because it does a very good job explaining why you should use 91+ octane. You might also find out some other things there
In a nutshell though, using a lower octane gas will cause knocking in your engine. There is a knock sensor that detects when knocking occurs and automatically retards ignition timing to prevent further knocking - BUT you've already had knocking occur, and slowly but surely, your kitten of a VQ will die on you because of this!
Also, your fuel economy will drop, and so will the engine output (HP, torque).
Since you've bought a Max, you've automatically gotten the lead right foot mod, so I say, pay the premium and enjoy your Max! It's an amazing car (I've only had mine since July 2001).

yeah what these guys have said is true.....awhile back i had my door open and punched the gas sitting still and heard a slight knock, ever since then i have not put anything under 91 octane... i live in utah and the high elavation helps so the gas stations only sell 91 as the premium unlike in hampton va where i bought the car it was 97 or higher octane. so move to an higher elevation or pay the price for premium...i read an article that had actual dyno results from using regular to premium! so to each his own but i pity the max who doesnt get fed right!!!

Well, I averaged around 300-320 when I went to school. It was about 10% city and 90% highway.
But now, I just go to work and average a little less than 300 because of 30% city and 70% highway.

I have 94.5 @ Citgo just south of Chicago...
Octane rating is one thing (following your owners manual is probably best) but the BRAND of gas is another. Purchasing 91 octane gas from Billy Bob's Cheap Gas is not the same as getting 91 octane from Mobil or another major gas company. The reason why the mom and pop gas stations can justify having lower gas prices is because it is actually 'cheaper' gas. The government puts less restrictions on those gasolines and therefore allow for 'fillers' and all kinds of junk to be mixed with the batch to yeild lower costs. The major gas companies like Amoco, BP, Shell etc. actually add cleansers to their gasoline and are restricted by higher standands by the government, therefore justifying their higher prices. So careful when getting cheap gas...cause you get what you pay for and in the long run, that cheaper and dirtier gas may be more expensive to fix down the road.

Very true. I got horrible milage (half a tank, gone in two days! And I didn't even drive all that much) when I filled up with some cheapo gas once because I was in a hurry.

Premium
I have a 99 5sp and use Amoco Ultimate, and get about 26 mpg. That's avg. If I do nothing but highway driving I get more. I drive hard so my fuel economy is not great, but you should definetly use premium gas. It even says so on your fuel door.

So if you go to a cheap a$$ place you might actually be getting Chevron or Mobil gas, because I heard they are the same thing... Not sure though... And I am skeptical about the value of those additives that Shell and all those places claim are good for your engine...

You get what you pay for..!!!
A good friend of mine owned a station. Sunoco... Anyway, he told me that the Raceway (Cheaper) station around the corner is able to sell cheaper because they but the RAW gas that doesn't pass other stations standards. Once the RAW gas passes the test from Mobile and other stations they add Additives to it Injector Cleaners Color Dye and other Crap... then it's sold to the stations. The Sub standard gas gets sold to resellers then they add their own crap and sell it to the Public. So YES it all came from the same place but it didn't pass some test and didn't get the additives to be sold at the more expensive stations... bottom line, You get what you pay for..!!!
