Tranny swap question

I did a couple of 4th gen trannies but I can't remember maybe you guys can help me out. I swapped in a rebuilt A/T from a 98 SE into a 95 GLE. Ok the starter is just spinning and not making contact with the touque converter. Should be checking the stater or did I make an error in not snappin the converter into the tranny before bolting it up? I put the converter on the motor and bolted up the tranny.

typically the converter is mounted on the trans first then bolted to the flywheel/flexplate after the engine and trans are bolted together

That don't make sense or I could be reading you wrong. If you bolt the moter and tranny together you can possibly bolt the converter to the flywheel cuz everthing is all closed up.
