B&M STS Problem

Hello all, I recently picked up a b&m short throw from an .org member. I installed it the other day and am having a couple of odd problems.

First, when the shifter is in ANY gear, it can move 2-3 inches to the LEFT. It does not move to the right at all, which is obviously good. This makes it very difficult to tell if I'm in neutral or in gear, including reverse.

Second, the shifter can move about an inch up/down when in first and second gear ONLY. I popped off the shifter trim and took a picture and this is what it looks like when it is UP:

This shows the blue collar and the ball/plastic C bearing. The entire rod/ball/bearing move down from that position about an inch. Am I missing something there that wasn't included? The blue collar does not move.

I think the problem is under the car. Check your shifter bushing and make sure its tight and also make sure the return spring is still there.

Or maybe thats why the guy sold it to you.

I wonder if the snap ring is missing or broken.

Also, speaking of the spring. When in gear and it the rod moves to the left, it does spring back to where it should be. Same when in neutral. Where can I pick up a replacement bushing for the B&M?

Go under the car and have a friend move the shifter around in and out of gear and see how it moves from under the car. You should see what is causing it to have excessive movement.

Yea my next guess would be to make sure all the bolts are nice and tight. My B&M has been tight since I got it, almost 3years ago.

Thats the problem, everything is tight...

Does it look like everything is in there right? I had no instructions. I would like to get a new bushing for the bottom of the rod, does anyone know any that would fit in to it? B&M no longer has them

It's been a while since I looked at mine but it seems like it should be fine.. I can see if I can find the box it came in and take pics of the instructions and upload them if you want? That is if I still have the box.

Well I just got back in from looking at it again.

I think the vertical play in it is from the rubber dust boot seen from below is installed incorrectly. I think it had so go above the black metal peice with the hole in it. Its not doing anything the way it is now so Ill give that a shot later.

I definately need a new bushing to go in the bottom of the shift rod, I think thats where my side to side play is coming from. Where can I get one that will fit in a B&M since the stock ones didnt work for me and B&M no longer makes them

the b&m ones that you are talking about are a nylon bushing. it came with 4 of them. I would think that you could find 4 of them at a part store.
Also, try talking to b&m again... that shifter is the same one they use for the 240 I believe. Let me find the box and I can get the part number if that helps ya.
The part number from the b&m box is 45087. I no longer have the install instructions. Maybe someone on here can jack up their car and take an underside picture?

4 of them? The stock one only had 2...did B&M include two extra or something?

I must have tossed the box it came in all I have left is the shift ****. But yes I want to say there was 4 nylon bushings like JSMax is saying. The instructions didn't really say what to do with them so I threw all of them on, two on each side.

Yea, I tried contacting him but he hasnt been on since.

EDIT: I got in touch with him tonight via PM. He had never installed it and bought it from another orger saying it was complete, but is not since there were no bushings. Im still trying to source a set of bushings that will fit the B&M

Is this resolved yet? If not, here's what's missing: You need the bushing that fits around the bolt that connects the linkage to the lever, PLUS washers on each side of the lever along that bolt between where it attaches to the linkage rod. I used 2 on each side if I recall...

two per side sounds right. I tried it with one on each side and it was pretty loose. Two snugged it right up.
