Gasoline Questions

The book says use 91 octane. Is anyone out there using the regular unleaded (87 octane). I know they have the car set up for 91 octane (better performance, effeciency, emissions, etc). Would using the 87 octane really hurt it? I'm not tricking the engine out yet so I'm just wondering.

Re: Gasoline Questions

Better to run 91+ unless you have an emergency. Your computer will constantly have to react to the pinging of the low octane gas by retarding the timing. Your fuel economy will suffer. Over time, the pinging that happens before the computer reacts will cause a problem.

I notice a considerable difference in drivability with 87. I wouldn't run it that way often.

Use the 91+ I mean for the xtra buck or two you'll spend at the pump it will be worth it's weight in gold if it prevents something ever happening down the line. Preventive Maintenence.

Please follow the guidelines in the manual --
They are there for good reason.
They shouldn't be questioned.

For no reason, and whenever gas price is high or low, I use both. I haven't been able to detect any difference in mpg, smoothness, whatsoever. Different gas should make a difference but maybe too little for me to feel it. I may use 91+ more often or always, just for peace of mind.
