KS detects engine knock and corrects engine parameters to eliminate it and increase engine efficiency. If the KS is blown the ECU will go into safe mode and wont really adjust well to different grades of fuel being used. Definitely affects performance / power especially with autos. MT isnt that noticeable.

it changes the timing to stop or get the least amount of knock(pinging). can cause poor gas mileage.
