Question about 115 mph limit and tires?

Is the reason why some maximas can't go over 115 is because of the R rating? What are the tire ratings, on stock se's and people who have gone over 115?

Do you have R rated tires?

"R" just means "radial" tire. The actual speed rating is after that. Something like 93S, 93H, 93W, etc..

The "93" is the load rating, the next is the speed rating.

if u want to go that fast buy z rated tires. u drive at the speed above the tire rating for any decent amount of time and you risk something bad happening.

Like he said, the R on street tires stand for Radial not the speed rating. R rated tires are DOT approved race tires. The tire rating for the cars that have a 116mph governor is S I believe, or possibly T. I think the rest come with H or V rated tires.

Re: Question about 115 mph limit and tires?

The reason some Maxima's can't go over 115 is because their ECU is limited to stop right there and not go any faster. The reason those Maximas have that ECU is because they came from the Nissan factory wearing S (or T?) rated tires. If you change to V rated tires, your Max may be able to go faster but the ECU doesn't know it You'll have to trick or replace the ECU. The SE and GLE Max ECUs don't have limiters.

it's funny, but a lot of car manufacturers *cough* american *cough* electronically speed limit their cars just to save money and put cheaper tires on. But others do as well like Nissan. Just a word of caution for those who clip the governers on their cars: Check your speed rating on your tires and follow what it says!

S=112 MPH, 180km/h
T=118 MPH, 190km/h
U=124 MPH, 200km/h
H=130 MPH, 210km/h
V=149 MPH, 240km/h
W=168 MPH, 270km/h
Y=186 MPH, 300km/h
Z=149 MPH, 240km/h and over

The speed rating means do not exceed that speed!!!!

So thats why I can't go over 149 MPH in my car. I have "Z" rated tires!

You can go over the rated speed without the tire exploding. It just means that the tire isnt designed for sustained speeds over that rating. My quick blasts to 140 on my H rated tires dont qualify as "death defying."

True, tt is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tires that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded. Additionally, most tire manufacturers maintain that a tire that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tire manufacturer’s original speed rating, even after being repaired. But how many of us out there a immune from all of the critreria above?

When the tire has mileage, the molecular compound deteriorates and the structural integrity of the tires reduces, so quick burts of speed over the recommended speed rating is stupid and risky.

This subject has been gone over a million times. GXE's don't have limiters if they have the C&C package. No limiter for me.

And did I say that GXEs had limiters?

Exactly. It's interesting thet even though the 4th gen maxima has a Nissan stated top speed of 137 mph, Nissan ships the non-limited Maximas with H rated 130 mph tires. The several mph difference doesn't bother Nissan.

right, but as the original discussion stated, having T rated tires with a low load index, don't be doing 130 with those....the ramifications of having a blowout at that speed are not worth it.

This is not true, I have C&C and can't go over 115.

Do I have the C&C? I never went that fast, nor would I need to anyways... just wondering
