Can the auto shift trim work on a manual?

This is an i30 question but you guys can help.

I'm converting my auto to a 5 speed. The 5 speed shift trim (#17) is very difficult to come by and kinda expensive being as it is that fake woodgrain. Can I somehow cut and modify my auto shift trim (#18) to work?

I'm thinking of cutting the hole a little wider and cleaning it up with some jbweld clay.

What do you guys think? Can someone please comment? Many of my posts get ignored for some reason so I delete them to clear up the boards.

You might have some luck if you're handy with the dremel.... perhaps if you know someone with a manual trans 4th gen, you can trace or measure the opening on the M/T trim and dremel the A/T to that size... Not sure how pretty it'll look but it might work until you run across one at the JY.

I know they're real expensive at the dealer... I listed one up for 30 bucks last year here and it sold the same day!

naw man we dont ignore u, its jus that ppl dont know how to fix ur problem.

I personally love the I30 trim. It jus looks so much more better quality. u can try cutting your AT trim to see if it will fit. If it dont work jus bite the bullet and get the regular trim.

That is what I will have to do. It just seems like a waste to pay $265 for just a piece of plastic.

Where is the woodtrim paint when you need it.

Thanks for the responses.

IIRC Yes.

If you've got a black interior you could always try your and at custom fabbing a carbon fiber dash kit but if it were me id have to do the whole thing.

Man I would leave the woodgrain because it looks awsome. All you have to do is make it wider I dont see how anybody couldnt do it.

Yeah, I want to keep it woodgrain. The reason it isn't as easy as just cutting it is because it have a nice lip that points down.

What I am thinking of is a nice way to had heat + cutting to see. Eitherway, I'll opt out of buying this from the dealer.

the auto trim miraculously fits for a 6spd, no promises on a 5spd though.

here's a thought, leave the trim alone and do the swap. then if you can shift fine with the auto trim, great! if not, do whatever you want at that point, carve it up to fit the shift throws or find a 5spd trim.

Yep IIRC, I was the one who bought it

I think that the auto will work, but I remember someone saying that it wasn't perfect. But if you put a boot on it, who knows. I would honestly try to make it work at least, before you go out and try and find another one...especially a woodgrain one.

Yo if you want... I can pick up an I30 woodgrain A/T trimpiece and grind it exactly to the opening size that my M/T trimpiece has... of course if it looks good in the end I'll demand a fair amount of change

The auto-shifter trim can work on the stick-shift Maxima. I would know.. I'm using one right now in my car.

I did cut my shifter down (nothing to do with the trim, it was just too tall for my liking)... I'll go take a pic now.. ignore any dirt that you may see. lol.

Oh ****, thanks for the pic. It seems that I'll trim it down but it will work in the mean time. Thanks again.
