If. . .looks, handling? -> get 18"s
If. . .ride quality, better accelleration & braking? -> get 17"s
This has been beat to death here, but the larger the wheel is, the more it will negatively affect both braking and accelleration. This is because of basic physics: a larger wheel robs more energy from the engine (accellerating) or the brakes (braking) because more of the mass of the wheel is farther from the hub.
Keep in mind, 18" tires will always cost more to replace, unless you come across a screamin' deal. Also, 18" wheels are more prone to bending due to road-hazards or even potholes.
When considering tire size, whatever your choice, keep in mind the overall diameter of the tire. The overall diameter of your upgraded tires should be as close as possible to the overall diameter of your stock tires. This will ensure that not only your speedometer and odometer indicate accurately, but that the gearing will remain as close to stock as possible.
(If the overall diameter is too large, accelleration will not be as quick, because you will have effectively changed the gearing. By the same token, if the overall diameter is too small, your accelleration may be slightly quicker, but at the expense of your highway fuel economy - plus it will exaggerate that already cavernous wheel gap).
www.tirerack.com lists overall diameters for all it's tires 4 sale.
Just select the tire you are interested in & click on th "Specs" link after you've reached the tire's main page.
For reference:
P215 60 R15 (1995 Maxima SE - OEM tire size)
Overall diameter for this tire is: 25.2"
There are many options in 17" or 18" tires that will keep you close to this overall diameter.
Good luck!
i have 18's and they do look better however the weight is just killing me, thats why i am going to sell them for some racing hart rims. I am not sure on the weight of 18 racing harts but if they are less than my 60lbs then i will go with them.

go with 18's looks very nice
Ok, stupid question. I just purchased new Konig Toxxins 17x7 and I now realize that I should have gone with 7.5, but I do not know what tire size to buy that will keep the wheel diameter close to stock. I have the 16x6.5 5 spoke rims with 215/55/16. Do I need to get 225/45 or 235/45 tires.
17"s are nice, but I next time I'd go with 18"s...
Well...I was in this same debate a couple months ago and I decided on 17"s for the performance. I got 13.6 lbs (
) Racing Harts, which are nice but I get MAD wheelspin now. Anyways, they just don't look big enough for the Maxima. I am dropped 2" with Sprints and the 17"s still don't fill up the Maxima's HUGE wheelwells. You can check out my website for pics, and you will see why I say 17" is just not big enough for the Maxima. But make sure you get lightweight 18s, or you'll lose ALOT of that straight-line acceleration. Maybe Kosei K-1s, Racing Hart CP-035s
, or if you can afford them look into Volks. Maybe take a look personally at some Maxima with 17"s vs. 18"s and you can make your own decision.
