Looking for newer Max!
Looking for newer Max!
I currently have a 93' se and i love it, but ive had too many problems with the car and i want a newer max. I was wondering since you all have newer maxes which year was the best and which would you recommend? Im currently leaning towards the 99' se.
wow, must be christmas time - seems like everyone has asked this question this week

for the record, i have a 95 gle and i bought it long before i found this forum. i figured all the 4th gens looked very similar and a 95 would be the cheapest (= quickest) way to get one. one important avantage of the 97-99 is better bumpers. read up & good luck with your choice. my max has been relatively trouble free... i changed a mafs, cv boot & o2 sensor an di have 116,000 miles.

I personally like the 97-98 models. The 99 has more restrictive precats and the Cali Spec Y-Pipes are dogs.
But then again, you'll probably find a 99 with less miles on it and in better condition.
i got lucky with my '97 in that the previous owner had only driven 9,000 miles a year ad had taken good care of it. I bought it in 2000 with 28,000 miles on it.
Anyway, besides emmissions, I don't think there's much of a difference between the 97, 98, and 99 models.
The 95 and 96 models have that ugly trunk and bumper and have been known to have more problems, but this may just be because they are older in general.
Of course, I own a 97, so I'm biased.

Re: Looking for newer Max!
A friend of mine owns a '98 SE (auto) which he's let me tool around with for a while and there are things I both like and dislike compared to my '96 SE (also, auto - yes, I know...hanging head in shame).
- '98 had much smoother gear shifts when I floored it. This was probably because it was newer and had less wear...newer ECU too.
- '98 had a heavier, luxury car feel. I _believe_ the 95-96's are a little lighter which is my personal preference - my max feels "zippier".
- Cosmetically, I think the rear of the '98s are nicer and, again, the bumpers can handle more.
Not too familiar with the '99s but as long as it's a maxima, you can't go wrong.
