Anyone cut 1/2 coil off Eibachs????

Anyone ever heard of someone cutting off 1/2 a coil or maybe 1 coil off eibachs? i just did the modded konis, and the car sits pretty even, but the front is slightly higher and i am thinking about cutting them,,,,just not sure if anyone has had a bad experience from doing so

One or two coils shouldn't be too bad, but IMHO I would never do it.

You should never ever ever under any circumstances cut coils. Cutting coils can completely compromise the spring rate and many other characteristics of the springs.

i wouldn't cut springs. If its too high, get different springs. If you want to be able to adjust it, get coilovers. spending a lil more on suspension now might seem too practical. But if something happens to your suspension while taking a turn, it might just smack your car into a wall and it'll cost a lot more than coilovers.

then again, i used to see a lot of civics back in the day on cut springs that bounce around cause they blew their stock struts and they seemed to be fine with it.

but to answer your question, no i have not. And i would be cautious of what the springs look like before you cut them and see if you will be able to mimic the ends to what it was before.

I would have to agree with Chris. You can do it but I wouldn't recommend it.

Do you have the Konis in the rear as well?
And if so, is the perch set on the highest point?
That should help you obtain an even stance.

hmm i mean what do think would realistically be affected? no one recomends it obviously,im happy with how they perform, just looking for about maybe 1/4- 3/8 inch addiitional drop .

yeah , i thought about that, only it would raise the rear a full inch, and then the rear would be higher than the fronts. so im thinking of a way to drop about 3/8 inch in the front . i mean , i could always cut the front perch and reweld it a little lower, but that is more work than cutting half a coil off the springs, just trying to see if im the only one that has thought about doing this

I wouldnt do it. Sell your Eibachs and get something else. I bet you will either blow the Koni's or get tired of driving down the street bouncing like a fool. Your ride and handling will be shot (YMMV)

koni's have lifetime garentees. so that wouldnt be the worst. i agree that the bouncing around would drive me up the wall though.

No one ever suggests doing it but half of them have a story involving cutting springs at some time. If you are going to trim springs (note I said trim) then a half turn to a full turn are max range for a full coil/shock system. On a mcpherson strut you probably couldn't take too much at all. The other concern is replicating the original coil end. Most cars have a flat coil on the end that you can't replicate. If this were a taller spring with a spring pocket that was deeper or more inclusive then it could be done very safely but on the Maxima I would take very little and have a set of backup springs. Of course if it doesn't sit solid when put back together, don't risk it.

The reason those Civics were bouncing down the road is because they went too far. When you cut coils you increase the spring rate. Cut several coils and you just made a very stiff spring. Besides raising their rates ridiculously high they also slammed their stock shocks/struts giving the combined effect of dribbling a basketball. On certain vehicles you can trim the coil, keep your stock shock and have an acceptable ride.

yeah i asked and i guess they can tell that they were on a lowered car and they will just laugh and send them right back to you. kinda stupid to pay the few hundred extra for Konis if they wont give you the warranty on a dropped car
