A/C gone?

Hi,

Just yesterday when I tried to put the AC on, I only got outside air (tried all the settings) but the air was not cold at all..I also did a quick check under the car and their was not water dripping (usually when the AC is on, you see water drops).

Does this sound like the compressor /condensor is gone or just needs some cleaning or freon?
Also, how hard is it to remove the Compressor?

Looking at the FSM, looks like it's just a few screws to remove.

Car has 155,000 miles
Thanks

in the compressor clutch engaging? need a friend for that look at the fron of the compressor with the car running and then have a friend turn on the a/c you should see the plate in the front start spinning you will also hear a click. do not just remove the compressor you need to have it evacuated and recharged your not supposed to just release even r134 in to the atomosphere.

As said, does the compressor cycle on? If not, jump the triple pressure switch and see if it does; if so, then it's likely just a low charge, and you need to get checked out for leaks.

By 'only got outside air' do you mean that the recirc button doesn't change the source of air intake, or do you just mean that the air is coming out at ambient temp?

And yes, the compressor is rather simple to replace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKulYTlhfeA

Thanks for that video...he has helped me in the past with other issues...

Okay So I turned on the AC and I checked under the car myself, I do see the compressor spinning and off when I shut off the AC. Now what does that mean?

I get no cold air at all at any settings..

Thanks

make sure the clutch engages when the compressor is spinning, if still nothing have your pressure checked in your lines to see if there is anything left in there

Going through the same with my 99 Max. Wasn't getting any cold air, I checked the compressor as outlined above and the clutch wasn't engaging brought it to a shop and it wasn't getting any low side pressure, diagnosis = bad compressor. Had Strauus auto replace my compressor and receiver dryer and still no cold air. The mechanic checked the pressure again and the low side was good but the high side pressure was low. Said it was most likely the expansion valve but in order to change it, he has to remove the whole dash and really didnt want to do that. I told him that he could go through the glove box and he refused to do it. I ended up not paying for any labor on the compressor & receiver/dryer but I still have no a/c.

So it looks like I need a new expansion valve? Is the diagnosis for low high side pressure a bad expansion valve? The part only costs like $45 and I called Nissan and they want $386 for the labor. Basically they are trying to bill me for the labor to remove the dash when we all know they are going to go through the glove box. How difficult is it to change the expansion valve? I'm really not mechanically inclined so I'm hesitant to do it myself without a video tutorial or something, lol.

Yes, it could be an expansion valve issue. FWIW, I just swapped out my compressor and expansion valve (well, entire evaporator/expansion valve assy) a day or two ago, and now she's blowing 30 degree air.

Perfect timing. Check out the last page here - http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...them-here.html

I don't go through replacing the expansion valve itself, but it shouldn't be too hard.

God? You seriously are the man. I take it that you got to the evaporator box through the glove box. Is there any difficulty in doing this? Does it take along time? Are there any things that I should watch out for?

Honestly I was very surprised at just how extremely simple it is to pull the evaporator box. If the AC is discharged, it takes maybe 5 minutes to pull it all apart.

Sorry I just saw the separate video for the removal of the evaporator box. You seriously are a straight up pimp for this.

Does anyone know where I can get the whole Evaporator/Expansion Valve assembly in tact? Figure I might as well put in a new evaporator.

How do I check if it engages? I thought if it spins it engages.

I just saw the video to replace the evaporator box...wow really easy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuJASXZU1kQ

So I only change it if the low and high pressure is not within range right?
Thanks
