After adding grounds starting problems

I appreciate any advice......I had to replace my starter recently and after reading several posts here about adding grounds might improve starting problems I added 4g ground wire from body to the starter/transmission bolts when I replaced starter. I also replaced fuel filter and battery cables running extra 4g ground wire from battery post to body plus I tighten the belts.

Now every so often I need to turn key several time for starter to work, when I turn key there is no click. I notice the problem seems to happen after running A/C for bit then car won't start at first, that made me think its the battery not holding charge but I get 12.5v when test battery. From what I read here my nxt check will be ignition switch not getting proper connection or might be bad but its bit coincidental that would go bad at same time as starter? I did buy starter from autozone so yeah its chance might be bad solenoid on it but it turns strong when starting. My question is...since the starter is getting stronger ground now, is it also needing a thicker positive wire?

Larger gauge positive lead not required. I would recheck the ground connections again. Make sure they are all clean, tight, and not in contact with other objects. Seems to be a little too coincidental that starting issues began just after you added grounds.

How are you 'testing' the battery?

I used basic multimeter to check voltage with cables off battery

If its not even clicking its likely the ign switch or something in that circuit. Voltage not running with no lights on should be 12.8V.

You need to test it with a load on it. You can test the voltage drop to the starter when the car is started. That will help give you a lot more information. I believe member pmohr(sp?) has a video showing how to do this without a second person available to help. Good luck!

I believe a lead acid automotive battery has 2.1V per cell with 6 cells. Voltage should be 12.6V off the shelf.

I'll check switch next after doing test with load on starter, it does seem problem is switch though. When I turn key it has no change at all, there's no clicking and absolutely no strain on dash lights indicating starting. Thanks for your help

I had the same for the last few months. Turn the key and no click/crank sound, but all the lights turn on. The problem was intermittent. Sometimes the engine cranks on first try and need multiple tries at other times. The problem got worse over time.

After researching here and on other forums, I've decided to replace the ignition switch a couple of months ago and never had the starting problem since.

Search for ignition switch and you will find a wealth of information.
