Strange brake noise

Ok here is the situation...

While cruising along (without any brake applied) my front left brake will make a loud squeeking sound. It is intermittent though, so it will squeek for 15 seconds or so, then just randomly go away, usually if I hit a bump in the road or something. If it doesn't go away after a little bit, I'll hammer the brakes and it sometimes will stop. Then it will just start back up again eventually.

Thanks in advance, and let me know if you have any questions.

I would say check out your pads, rotor, caliper and brake hardware kit to start.... you may just need to service them... like lubing up the pins and sliders, replacing the hardware kit and pads...

how long since your last brake job?

maybe your starting to hit the brake wear indicator...

maybe those clips in the caliper that pull the pads back away from the rotor arent doin their job!

pull it off, lube it up, check everything, throw it back together... 20 minutes, maybe...

you checked all the pads? the inner pads which you can't see sometimes wear faster than outsides. you have to take the wheels off to see them through the caliper windows

Hey, if you check them regularly - that may be your problem, especially if you use cheaper brake pads. The oil from your fingers when you're checking all that can be the cause, when reassembling be sure to soak everything really good with your handy can of brake cleaner.

Remember, I'm having the problem while NOT applying the brake. While driving it makes the squeeking noise, when I brake it typically stops it temporarily. You guys still think it's the pads?

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Yes it still could be your pads.... It sound like you're just getting low on pad wear if your squeeking is while not applying brakes. Once you hear that all the time you are really low and could cause damage to the rotor... Also you could be using cheap pad that tent to squeek when there new or braking in. I use Hawks... they are the best deal.

i did notice uneven wear ..... would wetting the pads after the heat up affect them ? for example i drove around for like 2 hrs then washed my car

that squeak is telling you that your pads are wearing down and need to be replaced and while your at it, resurface/replace your rotors!

FIXED

Yes, it was the pads being low. Actually only the outer pad on the left wheel was super low. Good thing I had bought the lifetime warranty pads from Autozone, so I just swapped them out for no charge!

I appreciate all the info from everyone!!

Check the rotors you might have a small rock caught up in there. That happened to me back in 1999.
