Getting off the Clearance Lights

This may sound like a stupid question to most of you guys, but for the life of me, I haven't been able to get off my clearance lights on my 97 GLE. Can anyone give me directions how to? I unscrewed the top and was able to pop the side out, where the flap holds it in, but there is something on the bottom holding it in I think. How do I get them out? Thanks.

Thanks so much for the link. But I have a question about this:

"The clearance light is held in with a 'ball and socket' joint. To pop out the light, use a Flat Head Screwdriver wrapped in a towel to pry it out. Using a towel will prevent damage to the clearance light."

Will that not do damage to the joint? or is it meant to be popped out? And will I have to exert a lotta force into it?

Thanks again

Re: Re: Re: Getting off the Clearance Lights

i think the first time you need to use some 'extra force.' The clearence light has a metal shaped 'peg' that is pushing into a socket. I can't describe it that well. Just make sure that you pry at the bottom of the clearence light, not up where you took the screw out. Hope this helps.

Definitly, I was going to suggest that before I saw your last post. When I pulled mine out I thought I was going to break something for sure, because it was so hard. I didn't see NickStams write up before I did mine (excellent write up BTW), but the one I looked at (Maximadriver.com?) recomended WD-40 in the socket. After you pull it out the first time it should pop in and out fairly easily.

NickStam, none of the links at the top of the linked page work and I can't seem to find any links to your 'how tos' on your homepage.

Thanks guys, I might try the WD40 sometime. But right now, my dad isn't too happy because he is really afraid that I'm going to break it, and then I would definately be in some big trouble. But in regard to the dirty white color, what exactly do you mean? Even if it is dirty white though, I'm sure it would still look better on my car next to the xenon headlights than does the yellowish vs. white contrast.

Thanks again.

Get a flashlight and pull on the light with your fingers. Shine the light down, pretty much inline with the clip that holds the housing with screw. You should notice the post and socket. Now use a large screw driver and put it between post base and socket. Now twist the screw driver. It'll pop!
