I bet the pot holes in D.C. are just as bad, if not worse than N.Y. I've driven in both places and it is crazy... Also, why to some N.Y. drivers speed (0-60) between traffic lights? Makes no sense to me...

NYC should be higher...
Insurance is a *****, roads suck, i allready popped a cable in the wall of a tire on my stock rims, and then on my 16' 5-spokes, my dad bent 2 rims on our 87 Sable and had to replace 3 tires because of pot holes.
NYC is tight like hell with all the traffic and seriousely impossible parking, I often spend 30-40 minutes cruising a 6 block radius looking for parking when I go to school.

Re: NYC should be higher...
Damn... That sucks Bro. Well once I hit a pot hole in D.C. (at some speed ) and not only did I blow the tire, but bent the rim, and bent the control arm. It had to be fixed on a frame straightener... $$$ anyway that was the worst

Andy, where do you live/work? I go the Pike from Millis to South Boston. Talk about pot holes!! Boston is a war zone with the BIG DIG, and I am smack dab in the middle of it over here!

Re: D.C. Potholes...
c'mon..it's not like we can go 60 mph for a long period of time..so it's a drag race to the light. 1st one at the light gets pole position and gets to check out the hotties crossing the street.

also note that NY is in there TWICE!! let's just say it's been better in the past few yrs. the roads were even worst a few years ago. just wait until we get the heavy snow and they start salting...moon craters!! and the damn asphalt flying up and chipping your paint and etc!!

Yeah, it's a mess. I switch it up between commuter rail and driving, but more driving. I work right by the new convention center construction in Southie and my car gets pounded with dirt and dust from trucks. You gotta love it. I look forward to meeting you Saturday. Later.

Having driven in 8 out of the 10 on that list >>
I can honestly say that the two worst in my opinion would be Boston and NYC. Most of those cities ain't that bad...lots of ripples...not a lot of potholes. Whatever potholes are present are avoidable. In NYC...the entire streets are torn up...manholes sunken in...plus you have to play tag with all those cabbies. Boston roads are actaully not that bad...but they have some serious trffic flow problems...traffic circles are the dumbest thing I've ever seen...the way the roads merge and split off...freakin' retarded.

I've driven in 6 of the top ten.
Some on a regular basis. They all suck big time.
Fortunatley, where I currently live, I can exploit this cars goodness every single time I get behind the wheel.
The terrain of Alabama is perfect.
Some hills, some really good straightaways, and the traffic?!?! ... What's that.
Honestly though, Birmingham's traffic can suck for about 30 minutes during rush hour. - Humorous no?
The only reason I have a 5 speed is because I can take full advantage of it. I feel sorry for you poor Bastards that have to deal with crappy big city traffic everyday.
All I have to deal with is Forest Gump.

Run Forest, Run.

Re: Which is why I have an auto
I live in NYC and I have a 5 speed. . .and I love it. I don't think you guys give enough credit to the VQ engine. It's very flexible. When in the city, I lazily go thru the gears at my leisure, not always fighting to keep the car in the torque band. The VQ is flexible enough that I can leave it in 3rd gear down to 20 MPH and still have respectable torque pickup. In traffic, I tend to only go between 3rd and 4th gear and I'm dandy.

Same reason why I got an auto too. Before my max I had Saab 900 5-speed, and I can't really say I enjoyed it that much in traffic.

Re: Re: Which is why I have an auto
You went from a manual 4 banger to an auto v-6. A manual v-6 is worlds better than a manual 4 banger in terms of torque flexibilty. The Saab probably developed good power, but you had to rev it, like VTEC Hondas. They ain't torquin' unles they screeemin:-)

Re: YO DAVIDL7 where you at!!!!
You can go with big rims they just have to be good quality not cheap. I hit mine hard a few times and thought for sure they were bent but nothing. But I still say you are the brave one with the 19's hehe.

So you like having a 5-spd in NYC? How do you live in those slowly moving standstills on the highways, or how about those panic moves. I am so fed up with my automatic, and I am really leaning towards a 5spd in my next car, but living in NYC as well, people don't reccomend it, saying I would end up crashing or something. The negatives of a 5-spd are things like, u cant mess with the stereo, hold a drink or a sandwitch with your Free right hand u have in an automatic, when u are tired you may be real fed up with the stick, u can crash in some hazardous stops or situations when u don't have enough time to downshift or press the clutch and drop to neutral... but I would ossume those things depend on how good of a stick driver u are.
But a lot of times, i drive and think.. i'm fed up with this traffic in an auto, how would it be in a manual?

Re: Re: Re: Which is why I have an auto
Driving in the city I go through this Jykyl and Hide routine sopmetimes. At first when I enter traffic I'm lazily going thru the gears, but after a while of getting fed up with people and taxis cutting me off, I turn into road runner, keeping my car in the lower gears and having the engine revvet at 3 grand or so, so when at opportunity opens up, I punch it and I'm there. I stop at a light and I'm at the far right of 4 lanes of traffic. I need to make a left turn at the next block. The light turns green I launch, careful not to get the revs too high cause I'll be wheelspin city, and I'm on my way. As for those little conveniences like usig a cell phone, having a drink or sandwich, it is easir with an auto, but the cupholders do help with the drink stuff.

I'm very comfortable with stick, and the VQ is very flexible. I can engage gear at 500 RPM (1000 RPM with AC on) and roll the car steadily. I once had and '86 Mustang GT 5.0 and that v-8 couldn't stay steady engaging the gears under 1500 RPM. Nonsense!

How can you be fed up with traffic in an auto??
