Rear suspension and timing chain

Hello All,

I will preface this by saying, "yes i did use the search feature" but didn't see any succinct write-up. If you know of one, please feel free to advise me of it.

I have rear struts that are leaking and the boots at this point are broken. I would like to replace them with a set that is as close to OEM as possible (dont want to lower ride height or sacrifice on the feel of the ride). Does anyone know of any that are really good? What is the average cost per strut?

Also it seems my timing chain will need to be replaced. How much does this cost typically and how long does this take to have done?

Thanks
Steve

The rear shocks are easy to replace. As close to OEM as possible would be either Tokico Blue series or Monroe. KYB's are a little firmer. You can get new boots at Autozone.

The timing chain usually never requires replacement, why are you thinking of replacement? Is it making noise? If so, the tensioner is what you might have to replace.

Thank you njmaxseltd. The reason i thought my timing chain would have to be replaced is that during very cold mornings when i start my car (and this happens infrequently) the car makes a weird noise and during that time it revs up to 2500, then immediately drops down to 300rpm and then finally settles at 1200 which is where it typically settles at when idle. What would be the reason for that?

how much are the tokico blues or monroes? also can i change the struts without replacing the springs or do those have to be replaced at the same time (eventhough they are perfectly fine)?

Lastly how much do the boots cost at autozone?

I can't tell you what the "weird noise" is.

The cold start seems odd, clean the throttle body and IACV.

You can go to Autozone's web site or search Amazon.com for the shocks.
You do not need to replace the springs.

Silly question. Are they shocks or struts or is that synonymous nowadays?

Are they shocks in the back and struts in the front?

Our cars have struts all around.

A strut and shock do the same thing, control spring motion on the car however a strut is a structural member of the suspension where a shock simply acts as a damper. Struts also have mounts for springs around it.

If that weird noise during cold start is a rattle, this is a common problem. Replace tensioner. Many how to threads on this forum.
