Alternator Cleaning

Yea, I'm sure it sounds odd, but due to a Valve gasket issue I delayed fixing for more than half a year, it is currently gunked up pretty good. Even starting to make what I call a "toy car" noise when running. If you've ever manually forced the wheels on an electric toy car to move then you get the idea of what I'm talking about.

My question is how aggressive with water and cleaning agents can I be when working with the atlernator directly? I'm pushing 315k on my max and the alternatory is factory so I'm reluctant to actually remove it for cleaning.

Thanks in advances for your ideas.

Use a can of CRC electrical contact cleaner, and then blow it out with compressed air.

Cool. These all sound like good ideas. I've had good experiences with CRC on my MAF so I think I'll go that route.

Thanks Fellas,

brake or carb cleaner would be a bad idea, stator and armature windings are insulated with a type of varnish and could be exposed causing a short.
