Engine brake the car by turning off overdrive and letting it shift to 3rd. I'm just wondering because I know you can downshift in manuals to brake the car.

your car will automatically do that when braking...if you prematurly engage 3rd...you're just putting unneeded stress on your trans. If you want to downshift like a manual...get a friggen 5-speed

Mine is auto and I used to engine brake a lot. Reading these posting reminds me that it is not so good to save relatively cheap brake by putting unnecessary stress on engine. Maybe that's why at almost 38k miles my front brake still has 70% left, rear 60% left, checked about 3 months ago during major maintenence.

You did, you missed the smilie.
The question was NOT: "Can I safely use the overdrive button to engine-brake my vehicle, or should I sell my car for a manual transmission car so I can accomplish the same thing?" (Obviously, he has no intention of buying a different car as an answer to this question.)
IMO, putting a smiley at the end of the post doesn't cancel-out the tone of the words in that post if they are negative. (". . .buy a friggin' five speed.") There's a difference between negativity and sarcasm. This was flat out negativity.
In the best case defense of your position, I guess you could have chosen to place significance on 'either' the message 'or' the smiley equally, because if you're objective at all, you have to admit they contradict one another in terms of "tone." Why write anything you plan to contradict at the end? If you have an opinion, say what you mean & mean you say. If you can't defend a stinging remark, then don't type it at all. Trying to candy coat it w/ a smiley is like throwing a brick at someone's head and then saying "Oh, i didn't mean to hurt you, so it's okay, right?"
I just disagree with your point of view, that's all. The End.
Peace.

My 5 spd max only has 68k on it but all my previous Honda's took constant redline shifts and never quivered for the over 100k miles I put on each. I know the current owner of the one car hasn't complained about the 5 spd puttering yet either, had about 105k or 110k in Jan '97. But don't know at all about auto's. I refuse to buy one because I can find a horror story about every auto available.
sometimes when I turn corners slowly like 20km/h, I brake to 20km/h then downshift to "2" then turn then acclerate then I won't get stuck in third after I finish the corner, thats the only downshifting I do.

Fwiw, I agree with several here who have decided it's cheaper to replace brakes than transmissions. Drive accordingly. . .
(There's your 'relevant' information)
The last words: Happy Holidays. No, seriously, I mean it.
Peace, out.

If it were bad for the tranny to use it a s a decelerator then truckers wouldn't be taught to do it. And the tranny in an 18 wheeler is a hell of a lot more expensive than the one in any Maxima. I have never heard of a tranny being worn out from being used this way, and I am pretty sure it is the way taught at performance driving schools, and at race tracks. A wheel that continues to roll will cause more drag and faster deceleration than one that stops completely.
