Oil Change

I just changed my oil and I used Pennzoil ultra 5w 30
My maxima has 168k miles. Is that oil to thin? I have been using Mobil 1 10w 40 high mile oil. I figures I would try the Pennzoil since it claims to clean up sludge. Is this oil gonna harm my engine because its thin?

Thanks In Advance.

168K is not high mileage. And Nissan says use 5W/30. I run Walmart Supertech 5W/30 and change at 3K with no ill effect. You shouldnt need to run 10W/30 unless you experience 90*+ weather often.

Our motors have close tolerances and require thin oil to properly lubricate them.

I dunno if I would change to Pennz. I would stick with Mobil1. However, you should stay with the manufacturers recommendation which is 5w30. If you have consumption issues with 5w30, then step up to 10w30. I don't think I would go any higher than that tho.

My Max is at 200k, and I use Castrol GTX High Mileage and I use 5w-30, and it seems to run great.

The only concern if your engine is worn is oil consumption at higher mileage, so check the oil level once in a while. Otherwise, as others wrote, 5w-30 is what Nissan recommends, and 5w-30 makes it significantly easier to crank in frigid winter weather than 10w-40.

Mobil 1 high mileage oils are excellent. Pennzoil Ultra is excellent. Either should serve the VQ well for more than 3k miles.

Regular Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30 seem to produce high wear metals (lead in particular) in the VQ30, I wouldn't use them.

I run 10w30, no ill effects (only been 50k though)

Locals run 10w40 with no ill effects either (it's the longest one VQ35 has lasted him).

It all depends on the environment the motor is in, but 5w30 (or 10w30) is what the FSM reccomends.

I would not worry about such a low mileage VQ.

Following a link from here I was redirected to a oil analysis thread and mobil 1 0w-40 was great for the vq. I only found 0w-30 at my walmart. BTW tests showed mobil 1 5w-30 was not the greatest for vq's. Just because all the jugs says mobil 1 doesn't mean they're created equal. If you notice the 0W-30 & 0W-40 are european formula and factory fill for expensive rides. Depends if you race, drive hard, want the car to last forever. If not, supertech walmart oil will be more than enough. $10 oil change including filter for conventional and $20 if you're using synthetic. I was skeptical but you can do the research for yourself to make a decision.

I personally do Valvoline 10w-30(phoenix az) synthetic blend every 3,000. my max does just fine with it. the only issues I have is when it's the middle of winter and freaking freezing my car makes a weird noise at start up and then runs perfect after that.

I used Valvoline in all my cars until the max. I am going to run mobile 1 in it from research, high mileage or extreme. I run 5-30 winter and 10-30 other times. I used to run Mobil1 in my mustang and I was hard on it, never had a problem.

I am in the Phoenix area also
