If you're not painting the door jambs, I would stick to a color that is close to original.
If you want my vote for best 1999 colors, here it is:
Crimson Blaze
Sage Mist
Sterling
If you want to be unique, paint it with the new Nissan color which I believe is called crimson black. It looks black or burgandy depending on the light. Good luck.

i kno you said black would show the damage, but i think black with a nice purple pearl in it would look nice on the max. then you could get some rims with a machined lip and get the lip anodized or powder coated a matching purple. my old racecar was painted like that and my front rims were powder coated purple, rears were bead locks with the ring powder coated purple also

Your best choice unfortunately is the color your car came from the factory.
Painting it another color = dimished value.
Nothing matches, door jambs look like ****, engine compartment doesn't match ect...

Who can say that there is hands-down a best color for the 4th gen? A favorite color is based solely on an opinion. Who's to say that my favorite color is also your favorite color? Your question should be rephrased to "what is the best color for a 99SE in your opinion?"
My personal taste, on a dropped kitted 99
1.) Bright orange
2.) Yonster purple
3.) Crimson Blaze

Seems pb isn't too popular. I'm not saying I would choose to paint my car that color, but since it came that way it has been growing on me. I really like the way it looks with tastefully done black accents. It does hide damage quite well (my rear quarters are dented up a bit and it isn't too noticeable) and an added bonus for me is it PERFECTLY matches the color of dust here in eastern Montana! If you are more than 3ft. away you can't tell if the car is spotless or has 1/4in. of dust on it. I would suggest a different color if you're paying for it, but I won't complain about pb. I think my favorite is deep evergreen.

Agreed 100%. It looks like total crap when you open the door and see lines where the new color meets the old. I do think you can get away with a slight variation of the color though.
