I recommend you put in fresh gear lube, drive the car for a while and then get the lube analyzed. That will let you know if the phantom grip is slowly killing your transmission.

ajm8127: The gear lube is fresh, but I will do the analysis myself next time I change the transmission.

TurboA32: Those were the street tires and I think I'll let nature finish removing the pin stripe.

You mean you'll take the oil sample and send it to the lab yourself, right? I don't quite see how you can analyze the oil yourself unless you have a lab at home. It would just be interesting to see what kind of metals are present. I would expect the iron to be really high.

Another question, how does the car feel around turns? Is there any more understeer now?

Regarding the OBX diff's They're good but not in the sense of just taking all you can throw at it all day....unless you upgrade the hardware in it and retaining the ring drive...Turbo dodges have been installing OBX diff's for some years and we're talking 350 whp- 500 whp boosted 2.2's in some 1800-2400 lbs cars....weight makes a difference in reliability!!!!!

I don't think I would give obx my business again. I'm at the shop right now with a pile of broken obx underdrive pulleys, one of which was from my car. The other two I had replaced for a friend.

When the tranny does go, which will hopefully be in the fall, I'll pull it apart and take some pictures of the wear on the diff.

Anyway, the car is back together now. I'm planning on going up to the shop tonight to lay some rubber down in the parking lot. Hopefully I'll see two nice even strips now.
If I was already going through all that, I'd try it too. You've got spares and little to lose.

I've done, dunno, more than a dozen rebuilds on Maxima 5 speeds and every one of them wanted to know how long it will last. Even on the rebuilds that included upgrades to an OBX or VLSD. I'm not saying my opinion is right or wrong, or that a phantom grip is junk, but for the vast majority of Maxima owners the reliability is too important. Broken diff components lunch the transmission in a split second (especially when the spider gear shaft slides out of the diff housing), and that's not a risk those individuals are willing to take.

It feels like the car is more on a rope now being yanked around corners, kind of a roller coaster sensation. I would say a tad be less understeer then before, especially on left handers (which is what I've been really testing out the most recently).

But I really like the sound of both tires kicking up sand whenever I take off from a dusty driveways and such (the roads by my house are under construction) or both tires chirping on shifts

thanks for the description. makes it sound like this could be worth doing. i noticed you now have a 6-speed so i assume you had a phantom grip in your old 5-speed or just know someone that did. when comparing an open diff, phantom grip, and the torsen style diff from the 6 speed, where would you class the phantom. more like an open with alittle extra traction, more like a torsen with alittle less refinement, or somewhere in the middle?

Here are my OPEN diff. marks. This was from a 2 step set to 3400rpm hold.

honestly, a burnout means very little with regards to the function of a lsd. now if you do a two wheel sustained burnout in an open lsd with the steering wheel turned all the way to its stop, left or right, i would be impressed.

Update: The transmission with the phantom grip went bad. I went to shift into reverse to back into a parking spot and it made a little grinding noise. After that it was stuck in 2nd gear with the shifter centered in the neutral position with the clutch pedal bouncing under my foot. I took it apart to look for the cause. First thing I found was that the throwout bearing had failed. second thing i found was a tiny dowel pin stuck to the magnet in the transmission. I have no idea where that came from. At first i thought it was a needle bearing, but it was too fat and short with tapered ends. I didn't see any damage to any of the gears and no wear on the Phantom grip or spider gears. I got the transmission shifting again, but replaced it anyway to be safe. I also swapped the Phantom Grip modded diff into the new transmission and installed it in the car. I drove the car this weekend and it shifts much better and is quieter than the last trans was when i got it.

Almost sounds like a shift detention (Interlock pin?) thing. Braingart, can't rember the name right now.

No, never had a phantom , only a VLSD in my 5mt 5th gen, open diff on my 5mt 4th gen, and HLSD with the 6mt now.

I dont mean to bump an old thread but you never stated the end result, if the phantom grip is worth it. would you recommend it? do you think it caused your other tranny to fail?

old thread and you probably figured it out already but like asand1 said, that pin in your picture is a shift interlock pin, it goes in the little hole drilled through the bottom of the shift rail. it's to prevent the gear selector from going in 2 gears at once, or from getting locked out of gear entirely.

Thanks for the info on the pin. I dont have any updates on the phantom grip yet other than that it still works. I plan on running the car at the track this summer. When i do I will post a before and after time slip so we can talk 60ft times.

I'm wondering if there's a OBX LSD that'll fit these cars?
