when u un screew that that connector this is what behind it

chris if thats what u did and ur maf died if ur good with a soldering iron pop that top off the maf and resolder those connection garentee when u took those screws out an pulled it broke those solder joints then u can use it for a back up

I did undo those 4 screws. I'll have to pop off the top and soder the connections back. Hope that's my problem.

After reading this thread I will just leave my MAF alone, car runs fine, I think maybe I will play it cautious and leave well enough alone.

The theory that if your maf is going bad cleaning it will kill it is BS. That doesn't even make sense at all. Lots of us clean our mafs all the time and it gets better never gets worse. The only reason some of you mess your maf up is because on the 4thgens you guys unscrew the connector part and break the connection like in the pics posted above, and touching any component in the maf regardless if with a cotton swab is even a dumber idea since the cleaner dries almost instantly so why would you think you have to dry it? And its specifically said not to touch any components.

some people spray dumb sh*t on the maf like brake cleaner not sayin thats what the op did just saying hence why I SAID rub it with a cotton swap since he was already dead but yea do not take the screws loose on the connector that will deff kill ur maf

luke95gxe: i didnt say anything about getting ready to spraying it with brake cleaner. i just mentioned that since I thought the two were of same cleaning agent/material and might do get the same job done and no my MAF is not shot because i cotton swabbed the maf sensor.

Hold on a sec...i have cleaned my MAF many times.

Jus spray as the can instructs and u be ok. Spray 6 - 10 inches away and be gentle, dont drown it, and let it dry completely.

A new OEM maf cost well over $600 so be god's sake man be careful.

All u shd be spraying is the element in the air passage.

I am reminded of the thread where one noob thought to install a SRI he needed to remove the maf and remove the screws on the maf and open it up. IT was da slow moment of the year! lol. Wayyyyy off topic i know, but it was funny as hell.

This thread is on its way out...

IBTL.

Seriously. To the guy who's all bent out of shape cause his MAF isn't working.. If its presumed broken you cant break it any further right?

Try Re-cleaning it.

Also Make Sure Its Plugged In All The Damn Way.

I have a BOX full of MAF's. Never Ever Had One Go Bad on Me.

I cleaned mine earlier this evening with brake cleaner. The whole point of brake cleaner is to leave no residue, it just can be hard on certain types of plastics. Mine runs great after.

On other styles i've used isoproyl and a swab with good results. Mostly depends on the type of MAF.

If you have MAF cleaner use it. If not, do research and use common sense. Try to disassemble as little as possible.

Clean you throttle body while you are in there as well!!

cleaning MAF/trottle/ IAC is my summer maintenance.. (waiting for weather to get better in eastcoast). I have always gotten extra juice once this maintenance is completed..

about buying maf from ebay.. i bout 2 -aftermarket new for like under $100 neither worked.. ended up going to local junk yard and picking a used oem for 25$ which worked pretty good..
my suggestion if you're looking for one try local junkyard or classifieds here on org

First, thanks to all of you for your input.
I would just like to say I don't really like the whole newbee bashing goin on. This thread was created for the "newbees" either new to the max or new to working on cars in general.

Ok, now that's off my chest.

My max has 217k miles on it and I don't see any problems with cleaning the maf especially with the crc cleaner that's what it was made for. I'm sorry the problems arose after the maf was cleaned but I do not think that was the sole cause. As someone else mentioned earlier you may need to clean your throttle body and IAC or maybe you bumped the linkage for the throttle.

Update from me: I got another MAF from a buddy, took the risk to clean it again (the right way this time) and all is well. I didn't spray too much (about three quick sprays on each side) and cleaned the screen. The car seems to be running better than before I decided to clean anything and I'm extremely happy.

No, this is not a cure all for the VQ's terrible Gas habits, clean your fuel system, run premium, and lighten your foot a bit.

i have never had a maf die on me after doing a maf cleaning, you need to use common sense and never, ever, touch the hot wire element inside.
