all i have to say is omfg lol its been a long time overdue for the filter you should of seen the crap that came out of this thing lol im going to try to cut it apart and take some pics of the inside

 

Yeah, pictures would be interesting. There was a post by a guy who cut open an oil filter, but he said he was sorry he did it with a used oil filter.

it was pretty easy dont think the filter had been changed since 95 lol i didnt thinkg anything of it when i got her about a year ago car has about 260k on it now but is running great and i run the $hit out of it

 

What is the advantage to a 300ZX filter? Is this an OEM part number?

 

I believe someone determined on another thread that the only difference in the maxima and 300zx is the longevity of them, the 300zx will last longer.

ya life of the filter was all that i herd of also but for the same price why not? and i was lazy too it wasnt hard the bottom screw on the hose clamp was a little twit lol but she moved with a little motivation

 

The diameter of the 300zx is larger than stock gas filter. I always go w/ the 300zx in my stock 99 gle

 

Interesting enough it looks just like how you would imagine a filter to be. This is what I assume is stock, it says made in Canada on the top, so I could be wrong. It was pretty clogged up though. I don't know how long it's been in the car.







So gas fills up the outside and diffuses though the cardboard/paper and out the top. There's metal caps on the top and bottom of the filter material to hold it in place.

edit: the top is actually glued to the top of the filter, no cap needed there.

 

I'm about to do this install, I did it on my 3rd gen max and it did improve acceleration alot.

it did for me in my 3rd gen, I can't speak for anyone else but I felt the improvement.

 

u guys prob know but never fill up when you see those big tanks filling up the gas station cause all the sediments and dirt are being mixed together so dont get gas when thats happening

 

Replacing a clogged filter would. Replacing a good filter with a 300zx wouldn't.

 

Going to have to do this soon. Mine probably still has the factory one with 180k miles on it. Ill have to check today. Thanks for this reminder.

 

Mine has over 200k original miles on it, glad i found this thread. Will this one be fine, from courtesy parts, non-turbo z32.

 

IIRC, the TT and N/A use the same filter so it should be fine.

Hooks up just fine. About the acceleration, it's possible that it improved only if your filter was really clogged.

On my maxima, original filter had 187k when I changed it. I noticed smoother idle and driving. Not particularly quicker. But my mpg went from 19 to 22.

 

Reading This thread I'm so surprised by how long you guys have been driving with the same fuel filter? Wow!
Fuel filter is part of the scheduled maintenance. And just like it's been repeated the filter doesn't increase power its just a longer lasting filter due to the size. The intake and output nipples are the same size as our cars. And the acceleration is due to the lack of fuel before hand. If this "mod" is what it takes for you guys to change your filters than by all means do it! Lol

 

Did mine yesterday took about 20 mins max. Smoother idle and seems throttle response has improved. I got my filter for $12 or something from auto-zone. Well worth the money. Hopefully my mpg will increase also. Don't be lazy just do it its easy.

 

It's a damn ***** to switch these.. on my 97, I started removing the intake and then just looked at it, tried to stick my hand in, said forget it and re-assembled everything. no way i can get that out lol. it's in such a horrible place. i'm scared to take my old one out because if i can't get the new one in i'm obviously screwed and have no means of transportation.

i'll try again this weekend... i must lol. pretty sure the one in there now has never been changed.

 

Does the brand name make a difference or does it just have to be F54794 ?

The only hard part is getting the old one off because the hose is hardened. The new one that is greased slides on easily. Take the intake off and get in there

 

Yea mine was simple because I have a short ram maybe. Just had to reach around it. If the hoses wont come off use pliers to gently twist them loose.

 

Im going to get one today and install it in the morning. I dont think mine has ever been changed either

 

I change mine every oil change (about 10k). I don't trust all this extra junk they're adding to the gas these days.

 

damn i should swap it out. still got the original one. i only have 120k km but the cars 17 years old so some gas may have varnished up in there... plus even with the 00vi swap i'm only able to get 550km out of a tank (supposedly i'm could to get around 600) and thats with 2-2.5k rpm shifting, no lead foot.

gonna have to get one and some seafoam and do that next week.

 

does a 300zx fuel filter fit into a 5.5 gen?

 

I ended up getting a Duralast z32 filter. Going from a 200k miles clogged A32 filter to a brand new z32 filter really made the car idle smoothly.

 

5.5 fuel filters aren't in the same location IIRC so no, it will not fit.

 

I just replaced mine with a 300zx filter and noticed the filter had dirty gas coming out of it. I gained a smoother idle and better mpg using premium gas and better than before acceleration! i dont think my original fuel filter was ever changed before and im now at 226k miles.
