Major Problem...need a new transmission + other problems!

At 198K+ miles, my tranny finally gave up. It was diagnosed as a leaking tranny pump seal as well as the front and rear main seals. The tranny was making this loud whining noise for the past 2 months and I guess this is the end result. Firestone wanted $2400 to rebuild it while another place quoted $1550 total for a used transmission to be put in. Along with the other problems, I'm not sure if I'm getting ripped or not....so please tell me if the prices quoted below are reasonable. Thanks in advance....

Not to sure if your getting ripped off or not but for that kind of dough you could get a pretty low mileage nicer 4th gen max

if the timing case is leaking prolly 500-600 bucks altogether.

Honestly, its prolly only yur valve cover leaking and not the timing case. Thats 300-400 bucks.

Used tranny gonna run 1000-1200 bucks. Depends on the mileage of the tranny. 1300 is not bad. that what it cost me to replace mine 2 yrs ago.

198k is a lil over the hill. Not too bad for these cars. But u prolly gonna spend 2k for all ur repairs. For that money u can get a max with lower miles if u look around.

I work the counter in an auto parts store and deal mostly with shops

most shops mark up their parts to list price, a few will do a 40% mark up from what they pay but pretty much every shop marks up their prices, they say to cover warranty work...some will let you bring in your own parts but then most will not offer a warranty

list on a reman maf is 476.44 but their jobber price is 238.22 but i do list a new one for 229.52 list or 114.76 their jobber price...you can always request them to check for other brands or options

valve cover gaskets fel pro list 92.16...jobber 46.08

crank pos sensor list 136.08...jobber 64.74
or economy for list 85.48...jobber 42.74

as you can see most list mark up is double...some parts they even get a discount off of jobber so then their list can be as much as 3 times what they pay

I wouldn't say you're "getting ripped" so much as you're getting quoted what shops charge to do work that you can't do yourself. They are providing a service and need to make money on that service.

There's no question you can do all this stuff for cheaper if you know how to do it yourself, or can find a local member to do it, are willing to install used parts, etc. if you're incapable of any of that though, this is pretty typical pricing.

That said, there is no way in hell you should spend that kind of money on a 200k mile car. find a way to do it much cheaper, or part out that car and get a new one.

i wouldnt put an 85.00 block in the car if you paid me. or a 75.00 trans either, i paid 750.00 for a 70,000 miles trans with a 6 month warranty like 3 years ago, still running strong.

they're so much cheaper because your the 1 doing all the work to pull it

The pull and save here is run by the wrecking yard that gets 450 for our a/t's but since you do the work $55

Of course if you go that route u don't get the 101 day warranty and the selection isn't near as good, its a complete separate yard that they only keep inventory of what cars they have not parts so its gets pretty well picked thru
