1997 Maxima knocking sound when I turn?

Hi,does anyone know what the knocking sound can be from when I cut the wheel to turn? Also passenger front tire, front end bouncing knocking sound when I drive over small holes, cracks in asphalt. Seems like there is no support. Please help if you can.

Have you done work on that tire side? Like removing it to fix a flat, brakes or something else?
It could be a dust shield got bumped. I did a clutch replacement and hit the shield with the axel and made noise later.

If it's not that then I had a little bushings arm (5inches long)that stands straight up with rubber bushings broke, rusted completely off. That made a thunk noise in turns because the suspension was hitting metal to metal. Look at both side and you will see what I mean. The part with bushings was $10.75 and I ground off the old one because of rust. Then it was easy to replace.
m2cents.

OK I found it. It's a Front Sway bar Link $10.75 look here

Interesting enough the alighnment was not really effected while it was broke. The noise was there in turns and I needed the window open to really hear it clear.

check to make sure you dont have a rip in your cv axle boot. i know it doesnt really fit the bumps (unless its really bad lol) only the turning noise but might as well check.

you most likely have a bad cv joint(s) and strut mount(s)

Check the strut mounts. Open the hood and look at the top of the struts. The nut that is on the strut should be dead center in the round opening as you look at it. Similiarly, if you grab the fender and push/pull the car sideways, that nut should not move.

Also, check the stoppers at the steering stops on both LCA.

Thanks for all your help. Will the tire fall off or front end collapse if I continue to drive vehicle?

no.
but if your axle is worn and the joint is gonna go you will be stranded.
i also think its your upper strut mount that will not cause your front end to fall apart its just not precision control of you suspension

Strut mounting bracket. Check that first. I had the same problem when I first got my max; fixed it and it never came back again

Thanks for your help. Is the strut mounting bracket an easy fix? I did not see it in the how do's section.

I opened the hood and bounced the car up and down the strut mount nut in the center was moving all around. Is this an easy fix? Where can I find information on fixing this? Please help if you can.

Tighten that center nut leading to the strut to 43-58 ft/lb torque. Tighten the 3 mounting bracket nuts to 29-40 ft/lb torque.

The strut bearing is bad. To replace it, its the same process as replacing the strut.

Thanks for all your help. Can I change one strut or should both be changed? The monroe assembled strut kit looks good from advance auto. Do I still have to get a spring compressor? The struts on my car look like they are falling apart. Please help if you can.

Never do just one side with struts - always in pairs. I put 4 Monroe Quickstruts on my Maxima abt 18 months ago. Relatively easy job to do and they have worked very well. One nice part is they eliminate need for using the spring compressors (which is difficult and a little dangerous).
