Changed Break Pad; should I have greased the cylinder of the caliper?

Is it a good idea to grease the outside of the cylinder shaped part of the caliper, before pressing it back into the caliper?

If yes, is silcone grease the right type for the job?

Also, how big a pain is it to change the rubber seal on that cylinder?

Thanks

generally no. you shouldnt have to grease the piston. and you could replace the seal but 90% of the time if its worn cracked or broken the caliper is just replaced its easier and usually cost less.

now the slide pins on the other hand do need to bee cleaned with brake clean and regreased ive found the sinthetic based grease works the best

i jus did brakes. I cleaned and greased sliding pins. Cleaned the bracket. Greased the backs of the pad. No issues or squeaking over here. Duralast golds ftw

I also grease the anti rattle clips in the torque member.
The piston does not get greased, just brake cleaner or compressed air.

I just spray the piston/dustboot liberally with cleaner and then air. It will be easier before you compress the pitson. Be careful with compressed air, you could damage the boot. Compressed air + brake dust "could" cause cancer btw. Last time I did brakes all I used was air and rags due to budget, and did just fine. A wire brush is fine for metal parts bit stay away from rubber. You could use a toothbrush.

I don't. Worry about the caliper body, just the sliding parts.
