try to pop it in, and spin it back and fourth so the c-clip drops in place.
Or you have the wrong axle

BUMP, I talked to the OP today and he still cant get the axle to stay in...
any ideas?
Even with the passanger side out . The drivers side just doesnt seem to click into place ???
Its a 96 maxima with a trans from a 01 AE. And he has the 01 axle..
Is that the right axle or should he be using the i30 axle ?

ive bought 5 different AE lsd axles..
this time even from nissan
and they all do the same thing
they seem to pop in and as soon as u move it
it pops out again
and yes i pulled it from a 01 AE 5 speed
and got it rebuilt at jerrys in branford
because it had bad diff bearings
ive been dealing with this for a week now
anyone else ever have these issues?
the c clip is there and the edges of it are gettin worn down from popping it in and out

Also the trans was just rebuilt. Which is what worries me but It was done by a reputable shop...
I just hope car quest sold the right axle.. otherwise I can think of anything else .....

it is exceedingly unlikely that they did anything with the differential internals during the rebuild. if you ever saw one out of the trans you would understand why I say this. it's not a part that is normally rebuilt - it doesn't usually need to be and it is NOT an easy thing to get apart. it could add multiple hours to a rebuild.
it sounds like the side gear that the axle seats in to is messed up (assuming you're really installing things correctly which it sounds like you are).
if you know how to use the macro mode on your camera and can get a pen light or other very small light in there you might be able to get a picture that will help me identify a problem with the side gear in the differential... maybe. it will be a tough angle and a tough shot to get but you might be able to.

wouldnt the trans shop have noticed if that gear was messed upp?
and yes the first place sold me auto axles
and then the second one sold me an open diff axle
and now i ordered this most recent from nissan..which totally blows me out of the water that it doesnt fit??

they probably wouldn't have noticed. it would be easy to overlook. I am 99.999999% sure they would not have taken the diff apart. I've rebuilt a ton of these transmissions and I've never taken the diff apart. it's just something that isn't normally needed. Though it would of course be prudent to look in there and make sure everything's OK, i doubt they bothered.

have you been doing this work yourself or has a shop? it sounds like you have but i just want to make sure you have actually seen these axles with your own two eyes. do you know for a fact that you got a VLSD axle (what I mean is do you know what a VLSD axle looks like?)
You have to specify 'locking', if they keep getting it wrong have them order one from a 4th gen I30, locking, they should be the same part number for aftermarket but parts store catalogs often suck.
Can you get a picture of this axle, trans side? You've not responded to any requests for pics so far.

not sure, but next time you buy one specify it has to be for "locking differential" because that's what all the parts places call it. if you said VLSD or limited slip they wouldn't know WTF you're talking about because they're idiots.
make sure it looks like the one on top, not the one on the bottom of this pic.

no you couldn't really have messed anything up (besides the axle seal). notice the splined portion on the VLSD axle is longer than the open diff one which means that you weren't even really engaging the inner splined part of the diff.

Yea, and if you wanted to order straight fron nissan pull the serial numbers off the tranny and give that to them, thats basically stupid proof.... aside from that tell advanced you need a locking axle not a non locking...i had this problem on my 2000 when i got my new axles there...first they sold me an acura axle somehow then the second one they sold me was a max axle just not the one i needed.... double check it before you leave the store this time....
