HELP! engine timing

HELP! engine timing
ive been reading the haines repair manual and its thrown me into confusion.
Lets say im facing the timing chain from the front of the motor with the timing chain cover off. Far left is exhaust then intake then intake and exhaust again.
in that order can someone please tell me which direction the dowel pins should face. Assuming the cyl 1 is at top dead center.
