Swapped out my JWT and now have CEL

Have a 97 gxe, was running my JWT ecu on the car. Have put that ecu for sale, so I swapped in a stock 96 5spd ecu.

Upon installing it and starting and driving the car, I noticed the rpms would shudder from the regular 700 rpm when warm, down to 500, and slightly hop around within that range.

I also noticed the acceleration to not always be smooth, but this has been very intermittent.

Check engine light went off today giving me 0707 or 0706 (not sure if i miscounted as the 0707 doesnt seem to exist) and 0303. Both defined codes refer to the 02 sensors.

I have not had any 02 sensor issues prior to swapping out the JWT last night.

I decided to check my codes again an hour later today, and the only one registering is 0505 which is now telling me (no faults)

any idea on what the hell is going on?

additionally, should I have gone about swapping the ecu out with a specific procedure?

Did you check to see that the screw is all the way counterclockwise?

Double check that you pushed in the connection firmly.

Double check that you didn't accidentally bend any of the prongs upon insertion.

Im seeing that as a 95 I30 5spd ecu.
I wouldnt think it would throw any codes for it being so.

If I were to reset the ecu (take a terminal off of the battery for 10-15 mins), any possible negative more work consequences headed my way? Idle relearn?

I'm wondering if the tune on the JWT vs the swap to a stock basemap is causing this frenzy.. kinda like switching your gf's pads with a different brand without her knowing, and then watching her fly off the handle during a menstrual cycle.

15 minutes is not enough time...it take ~4 + hours this way.

With the keys on, but ignition off, turn the screw all the way clockwise, then all the way counterclockwise. Congratulations, you just reset your ECU in 2 seconds!

Do it, there will be no negative consequences.

So this would explain my no fault secondary code pull later on. When I get home from work I will double check that harness and pins (work got busy) and post back.

The irony is that I previously swapped this ecu over just to see how the car would run before i popped the JWT out and it ran fine.

ECU pins are fine, ECU is all the way in. confirmed ECU codes are: (0707, 0303)

to add to the mystery, looking closely at my JWT ecu, it is a 96 MT. and the stock ECU is a 1995.

so why the fack does the stock ECU trip codes that the same year JWT doesnt?

Was there any change in ECUS or emissions etc that occurred between 95,96? If there were I'd have figured the change occured for the 97's and up, and the 95,96's stayed the same.

I remember reading that I30s had a different evap setup. Not sure how true that is.
As far as the net tune throwing things off, its not very likely.
I've gone from a stock ecu to TS ecu, then from the TS to Jwt then back to stock, never had issues.

I also don't see the JWT hiding any symptoms of issues (in this case being O2 related as per the codes) and runnin normally.

I guess my maxima got angry with me talking about her behind her back tonight because my starter completely died.

bump start FTW!

My first guess would be your rear O2.

After tapping the starter, all seemed normal on the ignition issue. I figured it was the starter that was dying, so was going to look into picking up new brushes, regreasing it and poppin her back in.

I have still not figured out my CEL issue, and to add insult to injury, the shuddering upon idle has gotten worse. During a short drive the car simply died while in motion, I bump started it to get it going.

One point worth noting was that the minute the car restarted, the rpm's dropped immediately again and I had to rev the car to keep it going, seconds later the car stayed on.

I am going to pull my codes again on the current ecu, then pull it out, pop my JWT in again and see what happens.

Well ninja update, seems every idle CEL related issue is ECU based. Car runs like butter on the JWT.

So my guess is for some reason the 1995 does not match up with any other 4th gen, at least up here in canuck land.

time to find a matching year ecu. lol

I did, the car definitely accelerated a bit quicker. Its nothing drastic, but the gains are there.
