time for Transmission oil change.
k, i know their has to be a thread floating round here somewheres but i cant find it so im making a new one ahh well.
anyways its a 99 Maxima auto and had 230k miles tranny is in great shape but fluid is looking dark is hell so time to either change or flush and i get a hard 2nd gear kick when its cold but havent felt a maxima not do that.
anyways what the proper way of changing the fluid and filter. do i need to drain torque converter and change all fluid or just drop pan and change screen and top back up.
im kinda nervous about doing it after reading tranny may fail after changing fluid.
also, with this many miles what tranny fluid do i need to get and can i get it synthetic or only regular.

its not low one bit i just would feel safer if it was a little redder lol. i bought it 3200 miles ago and it has come a faaar way and is a whole nother car again and i believe she loves the attention.
anyways i wanna pull pan change gasket and screen and clean the magnets, And i couldn't see putting the old fluid back in.

I would get 5 quarts of Mobil synthetic Atf and drain and refill......then do it again A week later ......my tranny has 154000 miles and I changed it twice since owning it. Once at 116000 and again around 20,000 miles later. I don't beat on car, and if you want yours to last I would be easy on the pedal.

allright, voice of reason here. no need to change unless it smells burnt or its slipping. you could just do the front 4-4.5 quarts and run it like bronx said. thats a safer way to do it, but at that mileage you want a high mileage tranny fluid like dextron 5 cause the lower dextron that they use at the dealer will clean the tranny and you dont want that cause it'll start slipping and then you'll be looking at a another tranny.
#6
Simple drain and fill will do the trick as suggested by bronx. Just remove drain plug from under tranny and get 5 quarts and fill with 4 and keep putting little by little to get back to the correct level. If you remove the dipstick and it has bubbles, it means there is too much and some has to come out.

i dont know about manual, but auto's are every 60,000 miles on a fluid change and i'm gettin close to that on my replacement transmission that i put in with 70,000 original miles on it.

4th gen has a hard 2nd gear so far there is no solution to this problem. since you have high mileage then you should use regular tranny fluid to prevent problems with the seals. it should run you about $45. drain while the car is hot not when it is cold. put the handle brake and put your car in neutral. you don't have to jack up the car if you can reach the plug it's 19mm, just turn the wheels to the right.
many are using mobil 1 ATF. sometimes i wonder if mobil 1 ATF is all that useful for our 4th gen. it covers wide range of tranny types.
chilton says 30k.

FSM says change every 30k for both AT and MT
OT but,
WTF emoticon is this:
:rollercoaster:
yayyyyyyy lol

30,000 is not what is recommended by the dealer or my transmission guy. i have the same fluid for 50,000 and looks a little light, but not burnt. i would'nt do a fluid change on a 125,000 tranny that often ever. drop pan, clean screen, put in front 4/5 quarts and do front 4/5 quarts a week later as bronx said allready.

actually a guy on here a while back said a flush and refill with all Amsoil ATF fixed his 2nd gear hit.

coolers can lower the temp of your fluid by 20 degrees, prolonging the life of your transmission. thats what i hear, dont know how many people in here actually that have actually used one.

The Haynes manual recommends using Nissan-matic "D" ATF.
All I have heard here regarding fluids is Mobil 1 synthetic and Amsoil synthetic.
What is the standard ATF Dextron II or III?
I haven't had any issues with hard shifting
My 99 Maxima is coming on 180,000 miles and I have been changing every two years since 2001 when I got it at 45,000 miles.
Changes mean, taking out the pan and cleaning, removing the screen filter.
Never found much dirt doing so.
I'm a little lazy this time, might only drain the plug and refill. How much fluid will that drop? A rule of thumb could be if it drains 4 liters refill with 4 liters but do check levels.
I've driven about 25,000 miles since last pan drain.

i did just a drain and fill, but i did all 9 quarts at once. manual says 4.8 on the front, so w/e you take out just make sure its between the crosshairs below the h. drive it for a day and top off if needed, just make sure its normal driving temperature.

Hi All,
The last time I got the auto transmission fluid (ex)changed (via T-Tech machine) was when my 98 Infiniti I30 had about 130k. Now, the odometer is at 190k+. I went for exhaust work last weekend (thanks for inputs from org members too), asked the technician to check the fluid, he said he can still see some red color but recommended that the pan be dropped, magnets be cleaned and filter be replaced. He quoted $160 (here in bay area california) to do it.
Two questions, is the fluid change recommended at this mileage? If yes, is $160 about right to get it done ? Can I get Mobil 1 synthetic in or is it better to stick to Nissan's fluid ? Thanks in advance !

i drained pan then started motor and moved it from park to driver 1 and 2 and R and more came out then it stopped coming out and car wouldnt move in D so i dropped pan changed screen and cleaned magnents, filled with Mobil One full Synthetic ATF and here i am 2500 miles later still shifts the same but no slips what so ever and very good.
i had 230k miles on mine and the fluid was black. on other vehicles i wouldnt change fluid at high mileage but a nissan is not other vehicles they are great cars and love to be taken care of.

Don't be nervous. I think this might be an old wive's tail from transmissions in the 70's
Also dont just change it, FLUSH IT. That way you change the transmission from P to D to N to R, 1 and 2 while the car is running-- on jackstands of course --can't fail. Use Mobil Synthetic ATF. I've done this on all my cars annually because of the hills around here and they are all 150 k to 225 K.
To do a flush pull the rubber hose off a line running from the transmission to the trans oil cooler. One side will pump ATF out, / Point that to a bucket and watch your old brown ATF come out and simultaneously pour new Mobil ATF into the Transmission dipstick/ filler tube.
Have a helper cycle the trans through P, D, 1, 2, N , R(make sure the car is jacked up!!)
That way the trans can't fail--its still running while you flush.
I have a 5 speed so I can't post a Procedure or a Youtube video.

Mobile Synthetic ATF
My Maxima is 5 speed so I haven't flushed my Maxima . I've owned about 7 cars with Auto transmissions since 1990. The Volvo AW41 on the 240's and 940's was a tough beast. I have a feeling that the Nissan auto automatic transmission is the same, based on the engine's ruggedness. I had two Mercedes 300D diesels, and one tranny died right in the driveway after I swapped engines. That was in the days of Dexron Mercon I.
The Automatics on Corolla's up to 1995( the newest model I own ) are also pretty tough
Anyway, I've been astonished/ horrified about what comes out of the tranny's of some automatic cars when I've flushed them--brownish discolored charred gunk with no viscosity. After that I've made it a point to flush every year.
Now that I'm using Mobil ATF, I'll probably change to every 2 years.

I'm not sure what brand Dexron III it is. There's a lot of different brands. I would go to the Dexron III's brand website and the Maxima transmission factory manual.
