proper power steering fluid

I already know that Nissan calls for a 1995 Max to use Dexron II or equivalent fluid in the power steering system. My problem lies in the existing fluid in the reservoir. It's a clear red-orange color. I don't know what color regular power steering fluid is. I bought some Prestone P/S fluid with Stop Leak, but returned it without opening it and putting it in the car because I was unsure if that was right. I bought Valvoline Max Life ATF that is suitable for GM Dexron II,III, and IV. Is that right? I just don't want to mix together 2 different fluids because it is difficult to tell what is already running in the car from previous owners.

No don't use the PS stop leak.

Use the ATF. You can mix it, it doesnt matter. If you want to change more of it. do this:

Get a turkey baster or a wet/dry vac.
Suck out all the fluid in the reservoir
Fill it up with the new ATF
Turn the wheel with the reservoir cap open, all the way left and all the way right about 20 times(jack up the front end of the car so the wheels are in the air) Car is off when you are doing this.
Repeat until you use about 1qt of fluid.

This almost flushes out the PS system.

Good thing you started this thread because just yesterday, I sa a mechanic working on someone's 95 replacing the pump and the rack. The guy puts in PS fluid which is clear. I asked him why are you using this....the manual says to use ATF. He says "ATF is not recommended for these cars." And to top it off, this guy use to work for Nissan a few years ago...

Wowwww...he should know better than that, unless it means more business for him $$$ :/ So the MaxLife is ok to mix with the pre-existing fluid? I would clean the reservoir out too with a turkey baster and do that whole process, but I don't have all the needed supplies yet. For right now, it needs to be at the recommended level.
