Difficult to start sometimes...

I am a proud new owner of a 95 Maxima SE, even thoiugh it's an auto, and have had a little starting troubles. I noticed that when I turn the key to start, sometimes it takes a good .5-1 second delay before it will attempt to crank, or sometimes it won't respond at all. I turn the key off and back on and vroom, it starts right up. The car appears to have a cheap battery and the cables seem to be a little corroded. I am assuming that this is the problem, but any guidance would be helpful. Also, are those yellow optima batteries worth the money?
Thanks for the help!

It could be the starter. those have always been problematic, but it really doesn't sound like the problem. Optima's are great, but pricey. a Diehard silver or gold will be just fine and between $70-80. If you can get a good deal on an optima i say go for it, but unless you are runnign or planning to run a powerfull audio system there is really no reason to go with an POptima other than longevity. Diehards are warantied for 48-72 (depends on model) months .
