What is the mpg effect of y-pipe without precats?

Just wanted to know. There are some conflicting posts that come up using the search function.

Is there a material benefit to mpg at low rpm after a y-pipe without precats mod?

Is there a benefit at high rpm?

thanks

Just buy the damn y-pipe. Less restrictions in your exhaust mean less pumping losses. Imagine trying to blow air though a coffee stir and then trying to blow air though a Micky D's straw.

Decreased fuel economy after an aftermarket y-pipe install is likely from the driver pegging the throttle more often as they enjoy the gains..

no precats = less stress on engine = better mpg

haven't seen any negative on my vq30, unless I have a lead foot that week.

In my experience with any new power mod, I'd get 1 or 2 mpg less than usual as I became acquainted with the extra power. Then I got about 1 mpg better than the usual before the mod when the new wore off and the car felt 'normal' again.

don't buy it if your existing stock is still good. you are not going to gain much for normal driving. the real hp benefit is at higher rpm. buy WS ypipe if you need one because it is the cheaper ypipe there is.

I do not agree with this. The y-pipe is considered the best bang for your buck upgrade for the 4th gen. It's benifit can be felt throughout a wide range of rpm. It was the first performance modification I purchased and I was very pleased. The only excuse not to get a y-pipe is if you are buying the Cattman or OBX headers that come with their own equal length y-pipe.

Like others have said, the misconception that modifications such as this hurt MPG comes from the fact that because the car is more powerful, there is a tenancy to drive it more aggressively. Once you get over that, flow improvements in the exhaust only help an engine's efficiency. Of course one cannot be ignorant of the scavenging effect. Your exhaust needs to be free-flowing, but it also needs to maintain exhaust gas velocity to utilize the gas' mass to suck the exhaust from the cylinder.

I stand by my original recommendation: just buy the damn y-pipe!

I bought my y-pipe a couple years back, but i never installed it. Now that the OEM y-pipe is cracked I'm getting ready to put it in with a new catalytic converter. While the y-pipe has been sitting there it has accumulated some rust at the flanges and O2 sensor threads. What's the best way to get the rust out?

Off topic but...

Last night i spotted a dodge Ram SRT-10 monster. Never seen the SRT-10 logo before so u KNOW i had to see it in action against the max lol. Only performance mods i have are the SRI and free flow muffler.

Now i know that anything higher than SRT-4 is a beast. This RAM was no exception. I was basically standing on first and second gear, and this RAM completely smoked me. Im talking real BAD lol.

But its nice to see some real american power at its best! it was fun

Anybody from Texas with an aftermarket y-pipe have trouble with the state inspection?

Shops have told me they can't install the y-pipe legally? If I do it myself, will it at least pass inspection?

i answered u in the newbie thread.

The y-pipe will not cause any CEL or emission issues. The guys u took it to gave u the generic answer. There are a bumch of ppl with y-pipe and no issues.

I could not imagine a different outcome.... I have the same syndrome but on occasional easy driving I get anywhere between 450-490 miles on gas tank, easy, super easy driving I let her breath up to 2700 may be 2900 rpms...
I am also sure that my new ignition coils and plugs from DaveB add to that...
But honestly I cannot say anything about before and after since I purchased the car with the Y-pipe already on it... now it has a leak on it but that is a different story... I already had my local shop put a new flex pipe on it and they said that whoever made that pipe used really thin metal, but he said that he will be able to bend two new pipes and weld a new y piece on it... Hence for around $120 total I will have a new y-pipe with better quality...
