Expert help with timing

Ok guys ill give you a run down of whats been goiung on before the question... i have a 94 nissan max with likw 120 k and it up and died on me one day. When i say die it was running fine and then in the middle of me driving on the freeway it turned off.. then i pulled over and waited like 5 min and it fired right up... no more than 100 yards after that it killed again. this time while attempting to turn it on again it was back firing then it stopped back firing and just wouldnt turn on any more. it cranked but did not start. Got it home. First thing i checked was fuel... there was fuel, then i checked the spark and i didnt have any so i tested each coil to see if i had spark in any of them. none... it was wierd that i had no CEL though, i plugged in a code reader either way and nothing came up. i get power to the coild but i get nothing for the signal wire. so I assumed crank position sensor or cam position sensor. changed out all 3 items even though they all tested out to spec. still nothing. Now before all these issues a few weeks before it died i had changed out the water pump. i just took off the the pump and tensioner in no kind of special way and i know i moved the crank to loosen the chain for the water pump and didnt move it back after the intall. i just put it back on how i could. car ran good than all the above happened. SO now we get to the good part. i pulled the chain cover off and looked at all the colored links to see if they were lined up at all where they were supposed to be. i put the crank at TDC and all 3 links were off by i believe 4 links. so i had been trying and trying to reset the timing on this thing thwe whole day and ive been matching up the links each time and at first when i turned the crank over 3 whole turn the links were all off again by 3 links. so i kept doing this and the same result. so i decided to continue turning the chain another 3 more times making it a total of 6 times and the links all lined up again... now the question has anyone on here ever reset there timing. is this supposed to happen... and could my timing been fine from the begining ??? m not a noob at cars just to nissan and specifaclly the maxima... the book i bought at autozone for this maxima does not give me real good details about how to set the timing just tells me about the markings and where they go. ive searched on here many times including going back pages and pages in the 4th gen section to see if someone else might have posted something on the timing but nothing. ive found how the chain should all line up and look like once its been put on but nothing on specifically how it works. if some one who actually has put in the wrench time before on knows how to schol me please do so it would really help me tons and maybe even others in the futurte

Doesnt seem like your tensioner is keeping tension on the chain and the chain is jumping teeth on the crank. Id try resetting the timing and manually turning the crank a few times. You did put the chain guides back on, right?

well u have a 1994 max so u are in the wrong section. Plus u havent stated whether u have the SOHC or DOHC, two COMPLELTY different engines.

pus u post is too long and hurts my eyes to read.

EDIT:

I see your garage has a 1995 max, so i suppose u are referring to that car.

If the car is off timing then u def need to reset timing. If the chain jumped tooth and the car timing is off, remove chain, reset TDC and timing, reinstall chain. Might need a strobe/timing light to do so. Dont forget to properly seal up the timing case with RTV.

FWIW, the colored links are only gonna line up something like every 300 revolutions, probably more like 30 really. The colored links are only for assembly, not for "checking".

Your typo mislead us into thinking you were in the wrong forum. 94=3rd gen.
