1997 Nissan Maxima would not start.

Hi,I tryed to start the Max after work and it would start. Engine would not crank. I have a brand new battery and alternator. Then I put the car in neutral and the car started. This seems weird to me. Does anyone know what went wrong? Please help if you can.

Definitely the parking/neutral safety switch, it prevents the engine from cranking if the doesn't think that the car is either in park or neutral.
