is she worth keeping?

Here's the story-
I did my inspection and I was given a list that was quoted for 4k in repairs, front in suspension work (ill edit this with the list when I get home and simple things like brakes and a oil leak (as shown in a past thread of mine) I was pissed so I went to a local mechanic and he made things so much better by saing he could fix everything and have it inspected with reciepts and show me my old parts for 1500 and have it done in a week. I spent 1000 for it and I'm about to go into the army soon so do you guys think its even worth fixing? I want to just sell it but with that amount of work I doubt ill even get my 1000 back. Ill list the stuff that it needed today after work. It runs and drives I drive it and work on it when I can I'm not sure if I want to be that far in the car just to not want it in the end.

That's the only problems I'm stuck between selling it and keeping it. If I sell is ill only sell it for 1000 and just be fine but if I keep it then that's 1500 in work and after the army thing and with what I have in savings I could upgrade I just like the 4th gens now that I know how to do some work on em

As a fellow soldier I say get it fixed, even if you get a newer car when you finally go in the army you will still have it to drive back and forth to work. I have 2 4th gens and love them

Sell it. You don't know how long you are going in for and why pay the insurance when you are not driving it. when you get back you can get another 4th gen or may be a 5th gen.

whats wrong with it? can you not fix it yourself? if you take your time and have a helper you would be surprised what you can do yourself....i did a head gasket on my 98 volvo by myself with no prior experience, granted it took me 2 weeks to finish, but it only cost me $300 vs. $2400 for the dealer to do it...

This cannot be a GLE. It looks like a GXE -- bottom chain of Maxima. GLE has leather seats, wood trim, etc..

If you like the car keep it! You can prob do a portion of the repairs yourself long as you have the proper tools and resources, and if I'm not mistaken I believe military bases supply enlisted soldiers with such a place. From what a friend of mine tells me they have like a hobby shop where soldiers have access to lifts and tools to work on their cars. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!!!

Get another DD and turn your max into a project car

She runs great, I posted it for sale and already have 4 people lined up to look at it and I sent pics of all the cosmetics. I sat in it today and turned it on and I started getting second feelings about it but its for the best at the moment. I will return to the maxima family well consider this thread as a now goodbye thread. I learned a lot from you guys and I will try to remain an active user until I leave. Good luck to everyone and happy holidays!

Yep, you're right. It's been a while since I was on active duty, but I think you can rent a bay for $1 per hr. and rent tools as well, which is everything that a body shop would have. On top of that, for things that you don't know how to do like putting on new tires & balancing them, they have people that work there that will do it for you. In the OP's case if he's shipping off to basic training, he won't have time for it, and depending on his MOS he may not have time for it at AIT. If it were me, I'd keep it until I find out where I'm going. He's going to need it regardless of the size of the post he's going to be stationed at if he's able to get any free time, and besides he may be in training w/ someone who knows how to work on cars and can teach him a thing or two.

I'd base my decision on how much I've personalized it. If I had blood sweat and tears invested in paint, sound, bodywork etc, I'd keep it . If its just another partly broken $1000 Maxima, I'd sell it and get another when the time comes around. There are plenty out there and now that you know the difference beteween the trim levels, you can pick up one that might be more to your liking. Cars don't store well - gas goes bad, tires get old and batteries go dead not to mention the cost of storage.

Your car is a GXE base model.

GLEs have leather and Bose plus other stuff like power seats for driver and passenger etc.

OK. ONLYME beat me to it

Keep it. For $1000 you gotta expect some repairs to make it a DD.
