Hey guys, long story short- I heard this squeaking coming from the front left of my engine and It started in rainy weather. I took it to a mechanic, and sure enough it stopped the day I brought it there. They said they took it for a test drive and that it sounded fine, and that all of my belts were ok. Now, 1 month later, the sound is back, but gone again! I recorded a video to show the sound. I know I sound crazy in the video going "Ahhh I can hear it" but the sound lastly for a day then went away. I thought if it was something bad it would be consistently making the sound.

That squeaking? For me it was a fan belt. Does it ever squeak really loud when you start it up for about 10 seconds straight and then stop?

 

I don't think its 10 seconds, a lot longer. Someone said it may be the weather causing it to tense and then release, I guess like expanding/contracting or something. I think I'm kinda pissed they didn't find anything. It squeaks on the front right hand side of the car, as If you are in the driver seat, looking forward its on the right

 

I couldn't hear any squeaking in the video, probably my computer speakers. Our cars hace a timing chain, not a belt. But I don't think it would be the timing chain as it is bathed in oil. The serpentine bel that runs the alternator and a/c compressor is a more likely suspect. As a belt ages, 2 things happen. It "dries out" and starts to crack and looses friction, meaning it can slip. It also stretches which will allow it to slip. When a belt slips, it will squeak or as some will say, squeal.

Check the belt on the ribbed side and see how cracked it looks and then check the tension. You check from underneath the car, in the center between the crankshaft pulley and the alternator. If you can deflect the belt a quarter inch using lots of force, the belt is loose.

 

Couldn't hear the squeak either, but definately check your belts. I'f they haven't been changed in awhile I'd change them. Don't get any cheap belts, stick with Nissan on those, I put Napa belts on mine & they squeal from time to time.


Another thing, I would get a new mechanic!

We have timing chains. Timing belts are toothed anyway, and would not slip (causing squeeling). If it did you would have bent valves.

Accessory belts glase and stretch with age, both will cause slipping. If its only squeeling when it gets wet, than you are okay, this can happen even with a new belt. When mine does this, I will turn on high amp loads one at a time (headlight, AC/defrost,HVAC fan), and rev t 2K to keep the alt spinning.

 

I need my rims fixed tuesday and I have to drive bout 15 mins tops. Think I can still drive with this? Anything big to worry about or just a sound?

 

IF its the belts you'll be fine. It could be something more serious though.

 

I have a feeling it's just your belts. There's two. Replace both and don't take it to whoever said it's a timing belt.

It should be fine to drive with. I'd also clean your TB/IACV since you said you've had cold start issues.

 

Just got home and watched the vid. I don't hear a belt squealing, and it would be obvious to us.

You may have a bad bearing in your power steering or something. how is the PS fluid?
