What is the fuel capacity?

Was looking through my manual the other day after checking out the thread on what grade octane to run.

I found that my 98 has an 18.5 gallon fuel tank. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I always thought the car had a 15 gallon tank, and here's why.

When I fill up the car is usually at or near the 1/4 mark. From this point, it will take roughly 12 gallons to be topped off.

When the car is at the E line, it will take about 14 or 14.5 gallons to be topped off.

All this time I have assumed that this car has a 15 gallon tank because of this.

When I get to the E mark having used 14 or 14.5 gallons, is it safe to assume that I have another 4 to 4.5 gallons of gas left in the tank?

Yes pretty much. The fuel gauge is far from deadly accurate. Ive never ran my car from full tank to a stall so I dont know exactly. The manuals all say 18 1/2 though so thats what I would go on. Its not like it matters anyways. You still fill it up when you want to. Even when the car stall that doesnt mean its bone dry, that just means the fuel pump cant suck up fuel anymore and when you fill up all the way till the pump shuts off there is still a little bit of room in there anyways. Going off the fuel gauge and how much you can pump in isnt a good way of determining fuel capacity

OMG - I never knew we had to put gas in these cars to make them go. I thought it was a never ending supply of rice that magically found it's way into the motor that produced all that smooth power from the Japanese power plant under the hood.

I do change my oil from time to time.

When you run really low a fuel light comes on the dash. It's yellow just like the check engine light.

You've obviously never run really low, and that's a good thing. Your feul pump will thank you.

Possible. Then test it. Get one of those red 5 gallon containers, fill it with gas and keep it in the trunk. Drive your car until it runs out or the gas light comes one.....whichever comes 1st

When you're done make sure NOT to leave that container in the trunk.

I repeat........make sure NOT to leave that container in the trunk.
