99 maximas were the first to get the NATS (Nissan anti-theft system). It consists of a transponder chip inside the head of the key, and a receiver at the key cylinder. If your car is not starting, it's because the car isn't seeing the correct key.

For this car you CANNOT simply cut a key and use it....it must be a transponder key that has been programmed to the car at the dealer.

Some of the 99 maximas have been known to "forget" the keys, and they need to be reprogrammed by the dealer.

I have heard that certain locksmiths can reprogram your key as well, if you want to avoid the dealer.

If you have AAA try calling them and have them send a locksmith, but get in contact with the locksmiths before he comes so he knows whats the problem. Some can help some can't.

That right. Two locksmiths told me they could take care of the problem but when they got to my house and looked at it they were like "WOOPS I dont have the tools to reset it."

I ended up taking it to the dealer unfortunately. To reprogram the module and the key was about 85$ so it was not too bad. keep in mind this was 2 years ago.

This happened again to me but this time the NATS module gave out and they are not cheap!! So far I havent had any issues but if it pursues again... ECU SWAP!!

Good luck
